Upper Iowa dropped a defensive battle in Winona, Minn. this afternoon, 60-44. While the Peacock defense played well holding the home team's offense in check, UIU struggled shooting below 30% with just 14 made field goals.

Only six players scored for Upper Iowa with four of them combining for a total of 16 points. The team was led by junior Whitney Kieffer's 17 points and senior Lindsay Carroll's 11 points.

The team shot 36% (9-25) in the first half, but in the second half the Peacock shooters went cold and converted only 20% (5-25) of their attempts from the field.

Seven minutes into the contest Emily Gustafson hit a jumper to pull the Peacocks within one point, 11-10, of their hosts, but a 13-4 run by the Warriors gave them a comfortable lead, 24-14.

Upper Iowa cut the gap down to five points on a few occasions, but Winona State scored the final four points of the half to claim a 32-23 lead at the break.

In the second half, both teams found it tough to put points on the board and UIU trailed 43-34 six and a half minutes into the period. Winona State took their largest lead eleven minutes later as Upper Iowa's offense shutdown scoring only two points over that time. The Warriors led 54-36 with 5:29 showing on the clock.

In the end, the Peacocks dropped the contest 60-44 to split the season series with the Warriors.

Next Up

The Peacocks will put the wraps on 2013 and head out for a quick holiday break. When they return Upper Iowa will head to northern Minnesota in January for their next games. The Peacock will take on the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 3 and the Beavers of Bemidji State University on Jan. 4.
