Recap
The Peacock volleyball team avenged an early season loss Friday night with a four-set victory over the Huskies of St. Cloud State University. St. Cloud State defeated Upper Iowa in straight sets on Oct. 5 in St. Cloud, Minn., but in the rematch the Peacocks controlled the first two sets and added a win in the fourth set to split the season series.
While the Peacock offense played strong on the night, it was the UIU defense that spearheaded the victory.
Jenna Hermsen and
Amanda Weiss led the back line defense coming up with big stops on Husky attacks, while
Alisha VanderWoude played big at the net. As a team, UIU held their guests to a .224 hitting percentage overall and less than a .200 percentage in three of the four sets.
Upper Iowa's offense was led by a trio of hitters including
Melanie Behnke,
Hailey Brown and
Jennifer Mundt. The three tallied 45 of the team's 57 kills and only committed 10 attack errors in the match.
The home team racked 14 kills in the first, third and fourth sets, but their best set came in the third when they knocked down 15 kills and only committed one attack error. Unfortunately, the third set was also St. Cloud State's best of the match too. The Huskies hit .429 and rallied from a six-point deficit, 19-13, to rally for a 25-23 victory marking their only win of the night.
The set win for SCSU came after Upper Iowa had controlled the first two sets winning by scores of 25-20 and 25-18. In the fourth set, UIU fell behind 4-0 in the early going, but quickly rallied to take a 7-5 lead. The Peacocks never lost the lead for the remainder of the set; although, the Huskies cut the gap to just one point on several occasions. The home team led 16-14 before finishing the set and match by pushing their advantage to five points and maintaining the spread.
