This Week in Peacock Volleyball… The Peacocks, who are hosting their final home weekend of the 2013 season, are coming off their best hitting performance of the season and a win over the University of Mary (3-0) that snapped a twelve-match skid. Upper Iowa will welcome the Huskies of St. Cloud State University, who are on a seven-match slide of their own, on Friday night and the #3 Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon. UIU was swept by both teams in their first meetings in St. Cloud and Duluth, Minn. as the Peacock attack struggled in both matches.
"BEHNK" CLOSING… Senior
Melanie Behnke is closing in on the end of her career in Peacock blue and white. The Seymour, Wis. native has racked up 689 kills, tied for 6th place all-time at UIU, in her 73 matches played. Her 397 a season ago, set the new record for kills in a season surpassing the old mark by 20. Following her record-setting season in 2012, Behnke was selected as an All-NSIC Second Team performer. She has added 288 digs, 81 blocks, 18 aces and 17 assists. The program has posted a 47-67 record the last four years after a 38-90 record in their first four seasons in the Northern Sun Conference.
LAST WEEK FOR THE PEACOCKS... Behnke led the Peacock offense on the week to a 1-2 record with 44 kills (4.0/set) while hitting .241. Behnke added 19 digs and 7 blocks in the three matches.
Amanda Weiss held the back line of the Peacocks while winning a match in three chances this week. Weiss dug up 63 balls this week for a 5.25/set average. The junior libero added 4 assists and a service ace. The Peacocks lost a four-set match to Minnesota State on the road on Tuesday and a five-set match to Minot State on Friday before finally breaking back into the win column with their best hitting performance of the season. UIU hit .341 with 43 kills versus U-Mary to snap a twelve-match skid.
LAST WEEK FOR THE HUSKIES... St. Cloud State took on #8 Southwest Minnesota State last Friday. The Huskies were defeated handily in set one, but fought hard in sets two and three before dropping both two-point decisions. Senior Ellie Dietzen led the Huskies on Friday with 11 kills and a .563 attack percentage. Sophomore Kellan Flynn was right behind, finishing with 10 kills and .471 attack percentage. On Saturday, the Huskies took on the University of Sioux Falls in a match that lasted a little over two hours; the Huskies ultimately fell in a heartbreaking five-set loss after taking a 2-1 lead. The Huskies hit just an .086 attack percentage compared to USF's .236. Flynn led St. Cloud State with 11 kills and a .217 hitting percentage, while Dietzen posted nine kills and eight blocks in the match.
LAST WEEK FOR THE #3 BULLDOGS... The third-ranked Bulldogs knocked off a ranked team for the fourth time in 2013 as UMD earned a pair of sweeps at Romano Gym in Duluth. Junior right side hitter Maddy Siroin had 15 kills on the weekend and hit .538 with just one attack error. She hit .700 against Sioux Falls on Friday and added five total blocks and five digs to help the Bulldogs to a pair of wins on the weekend. Freshman middle blocker Sydnie Mauch led the way for UMD with 11 total blocks, including three solos on the weekend. She also hit .310 with 14 kills on the offensive end. Sophomore setter Ashley Hinsch helped direct the Bulldogs' offense with 80 assists on the weekend. She added one kill, a pair of block assists, one service ace, and six digs.
