The Peacock volleyball team used their best hitting performance of the season to sweep the visiting Marauders of the University of Mary and snap a twelve-match slide. The last win UIU enjoyed was a five-set decision over the University of Minnesota Crookston in late September, but today in Dorman Gym... the Peacock hitters came out in force and powered the team to a straight-set victory.
Senior
Melanie Behnke led the team in the first set with 6 kills as the Peacocks jumped out to a 19-10 lead and then held on for a 25-19 win. UIU hit .267 in the first set but Behnke connected on 6 of her 7 attempts; U-Mary hit just .059 in the opening frame.
In the second set, UIU's attack success moved to sophomore
Jennifer Mundt and freshman
Chelsea Berry, who each racked five kills. Overall, the Peacocks' hitting improved to their high for the match, .424, with 17 kills and just 3 attack errors. Upper Iowa claimed the second set by a 25-22 score as U-Mary was able to tally 14 kills with just 3 errors.
In the final set, the three hitters for the Peacocks combined for 12 of the team's 13 kills en route to a 25-18 win and match victory. Late in the set the score was tied 17-17, but the home team dug deep and finished the match on an 8-1 run which was fueled by a kill from Mundt, two from Berry and two from Behnke including the final ball that ended the match.
For the match, UIU hit .341, their highest percentage of the season with 43 kills and only 13 attack errors.

Next Up
Upper Iowa will remain at home next weekend for their final two matches in Fayette for the season. The Peacocks will play the Huskies of St. Cloud State University on Friday night and then welcome the nationally-ranked Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth to Prochaska Court on Saturday afternoon.
