Peacocks to Close 2013 Regular Season with #1 Mavericks

Upper Iowa and Minnesota State University, Mankato will kick off at noon in the teams' final regular season game of the 2013 campaign.

THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK FOOTBALL... The Peacocks will welcome the #1 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato to Fayette and Harms-Eischeid Stadium on Saturday for UIU's Senior Day. The game will mark the final regular season contest for both teams. Minnesota State earned the NSIC South Division title last week and enters the game as one of four unbeaten teams in NCAA Division II. Upper Iowa has entered rare air with 6 wins this season marking just the 16th time reaching that mark in the program's 119-year football history. The Peacocks, who have only had 4 winning seasons since 1966's 8-2 campaign, are guaranteed of just their 35th winning season thanks to a 24-21 victory at Wayne State last week. The UIU football team will recognize 18 seniors prior to kickoff.

THE SERIES... The Mavericks have won all seven meetings in the series which began in 2004 and 2005 when Upper Iowa was moving up to NCAA Division II and then restarted when Minnesota State gained membership in the Northern Sun Conference prior to the 2008 season.

RUNNING ON "ETHAN"-OL... Senior Ethan Douglas has fueled the Peacock defense over the last four years and will take the field one final time in a Peacock uniform today. Douglas has doling out big hits for four years from his linebacker position with 374 tackles including 205 solo stops and 33.5 tackles for loss. This season, the Brodhead, Wis. product has a team-high 97 tackles (46th NCAA, 3rd NSIC) with 54 coming on his own (37th NCAA, 2nd NSIC) and 13 behind the line of scrimmage (61st NCAA, 4th NSIC).

"CHRIS" CROSSING DEFENDERS... Junior running back Chris Smith is now just 3 yards shy of the all-time career rushing yardage mark of 3,198 set by T.C. Hicks (2004-07). The Brown Deer, Wis. native broke the single-season record for rushing yards at Upper Iowa two weeks ago and currently stands at 1,672 yards in 2013, which ranks as the fifth highest total in the country and second in the NSIC. Smith's average per game of 167.2 on the ground also ranks fifth in the nation and second in the conference, while he is also ranked in rushing touchdowns with 16 (11th NCAA, 2nd NSIC), all-purpose yards/game with 175.7 (15th NCAA, 2nd NSIC), scoring/game with 9.6 (18th NCAA, 2nd NSIC). Prior to this season, the NSIC record for rushing yards in a season was held by Rayon Simmons of Winona State, who ran for 1,586 yards in 2012. Both Smith and Tyler Tonderum of Southwest Minnesota State University have surpassed that mark. Tonderum has rushed for 1,864 yards. Earlier this week, Smith was named to the regional ballot for NCAA Division II's Harlon Hill Award and earned Capital One Academic All-District 3 honors.

13 FOR 15... Redshirt junior Cole Jaeschke (#15) owns 13 of the 14 passing records at Upper Iowa and has crossed the 8,000-yard plateau in his career (8,216 yards). The Moorland, Iowa product has thrown for 2,787 yards and 22 touchdowns this season while completing 61.7% of his passes. He is currently just 197 yards shy of breaking the all-time UIU mark for passing yards in a season (2,983) which he set last year. Jaeschke reset his own record for completions in a season (240) thanks to the 21 he picked up last week and is now just 33 attempts shy of his record (422) set a year ago. UIU's signal caller is leading the NSIC in passing yards and is second in completions/game, third in passing yards/game, passing touchdowns and completion percentage and fourth in total offense. On the national scene Jaeschke is ranked 17th in completions/game (24.0), 20th in passing yards, 27th in passing touchdowns (22), 28th in passing yards/game (278.7), 30th in total offense (293.9), 37th in completion percentage (61.7%), 45th in points responsible for (142) and 47th in points responsible/game (14.6).
