UIU Volleyball Closes 2013 Campaign in Northern Minnesota

The Peacock volleyball team will play at Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston this weekend in their final matches of the season.

This Week in Peacock Volleyball… The Peacocks wil close out their 2013 campaign this weekend in northern Minnesota. Upper Iowa will visit Bemidji State University on Friday night and then head to the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday afternoon. Upper Iowa defeated the Golden Eagles of UMC in five sets on Sept. 27 in Fayette, but dropped a five-set decision to the Beavers of BSU on Sept. 28.

LAST WEEK FOR THE PEACOCKS... #Hailey Brown# led the Peacock offense last week with 37 assists (5.29/set) and 25 kills (3.57/set) while hitting .412 for the Peacocks. Brown added 4 aces, 15 digs and 4 blocks in Upper Iowa's split with St. Cloud State (3-1) and #3 Minnesota Duluth (0-3). Upper Iowa defeated St. Cloud State Friday night in Fayette in four sets (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20) and played solid against the #3 Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth, but dropped a straight set decision (25-23, 25-15, 25-17) on Saturday. Melanie Behnke hit a team-high 28 kills and added 20 digs, while Jenna Hermsen paced the offense with Brown adding 40 assists. Amanda Weiss picked up 20 digs on the back line and Alisha VanderWoude denied 6 balls at the net.

LAST WEEK FOR THE BEAVERS... The Bemidji State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches last week against No. 1 Concordia University, St. Paul and Minnesota State University, Mankato by identical 3-0 scores. The Beavers were led by Kayla DeJong who totaled 34 digs in the two matches (17 digs per match).

LAST WEEK FOR THE GOLDEN EAGLES... The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team went 0-2 on the weekend on the road against Minnesota State University, Mankato and Concordia University, St. Paul. The Golden Eagles fell 3-2 to the Mavericks Friday after winning the first set and battled to win the fourth set but came up on the wrong end of things in the fifth set. The Golden Eagles were led by 18 kills from Brittany Looker on Friday. Saturday, UMC was competitive in the first set but ultimately fell 3-0 to six-time defending National Champion No. 1 Concordia. The Golden Eagles have a crucial home weekend to wrap up the 2013 NSIC regular-season. UMC is currently in a tie for eighth place with Minnesota State. The Golden Eagles have to have a strong weekend against Winona State University and Upper Iowa University in order to advanced to the NSIC Tournament, which takes the top eight teams from the conference regular season.
