UIU Game Notes

This Week in Peacock Basketball... Upper Iowa kicks off their 2013-14 campaign this week with three non-conference games. The Peacocks will open the season in Kenosha, Wisconsin against the Rangers of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, before returning to Fayette for a pair of games this coming Friday and Sunday. The home tilts feature matchups against former Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe, Wartburg College, and Lewis University, the #18 team in NCAA Division II.

Remembering the 2012-13 Campaign... The Peacock women's basketball team more than doubled their win total from 2011-12 last season earning seven wins and falling by less than nine points in nine other contests. Upper Iowa (7-23, 4-18 NSIC) said good-bye to a pair of seniors, but return five of their top six scorers from a season ago.

About the Rangers: UW-Parkside looks to reload after finishing last season with a 21-10 overall record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament for the third consecutive season. UW-Parkside lost its two leading scorers from a year ago in Jenna Endisch (13.6 points per game) and Sierra West (9.1 ppg, 5.7 assists per game), part of a stellar senior class that posted a four-year mark of 92-31 with four NCAA Tournament appearances, two trips to the NCAA Sweet 16 and two Great Lakes Valley Conference division crowns. Leading the returning players is the squad's lone senior Danielle Slivka. The 2013 Second Team All-GLVC selection averaged 8.5 points per game and a team-best 7.3 rebounds per game last season. Slivka started all 31 games last season, scoring in double figures on 11 occasions while posting four double-doubles.

"Kie" Starter... Junior Whitney Kieffer was named as an NSIC Player to Watch after starting every game last season and earning the nod as an All-NSIC First Team performer as a sophomore and an All-NSIC Freshman Team selection her first year. She averaged 18.7 points per game last season. The Scales Mound, Ill. product's scoring ranked 15th in the nation and 3rd in the NSIC as she racked up 560 points on the year, the second highest total in Peacock history; Christel Brown netted 579 points during the 1985-86 season. For her career, Kieffer has scored 971 points and is just 29 points shy of becoming the 11th women's basketball player to reach the 1,000 point plateau. The last UIU player to reach the mark was Christa Hammel in January 2008.

"Car" Show... Carly Pagel, a sophomore from Sumner, Iowa, started all 26 games that she played in averaging 11.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season. She shot 47.8% (119-249) from the floor and added 61 makes at the free throw line in 104 chances; her field goal percentage ranked sixth-best among NSIC individuals. Pagel recorded two double-doubles and posted season-highs in points with 22 at the U-Mary and in rebounds with 16 at Southwest Minnesota State. In NSIC-only games, she was 19th in scoring with 12.5 points per game and 13th in rebounding with 7.2 boards per game. Included in her solid rebounding each night were 2.8 offensive boards, which ranked 6th in the conference.
