THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK FOOTBALL... The Peacocks will welcome the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls to Harms-Eischeid Stadium this Saturday evening at 6 p.m. The game will mark the Cougars' first trip to Fayette for football as they lead the series 1-0 after last year's wild shootout. Both teams come in with powerful offenses combining for 999.3 yards per game in total offense. While the Peacocks offer a very balanced attack behind running back Chris Smith and quarterback Cole Jaeschke, the Cougars have chewed up yards on the ground this season averaging 288.5 rushing yards per game, second best in the NSIC, and a total of 26 touchdowns. Of late, Sioux Falls has been throwing a bit more and have raised their passing yards per game up to 205.8. The Peacocks are averaging 200 yards a game on the ground and an NSIC-best 305.1 yards through the air per game.
LAST YEAR'S SHOOTOUT IN SIOUX FALLS... Last year's wild shootout in South Dakota was the first-ever meeting between Upper Iowa and Sioux Falls. After the nationally-ranked Cougars jumped all over the Peacocks early and took a 37-0 lead, UIU quarterback Cole Jaeschke put the team on his right arm and rallied the Peacocks with the greatest passing performance in Upper Iowa history. The final scoreboard showed Sioux Falls 54 - Upper Iowa 41 in a game that was filled with runs and dominance by each team. There were some blemishes on the signal caller's stat sheet, but Jaeschke threw for 606 yards on 43 completions in 78 attempts, all three setting new Peacock records. He threw for five touchdowns and also ran for 25 yards and a score. UIU scored their sixth touchdown pulling within six, 47-41, with 27 seconds to play. The Peacocks lined up for the onside kick, but the Cougars' Nick Bonte picked up a nice bounce and broke free for a 42-yard touchdown return.
WITNESS TO GREATNESS... Junior running back Chris Smith is making Peacock football fans witnesses to his run on the record books. The Brown Deer, Wis. native has rushed for 1,259 yards this season and is now second all-time at UIU with 2,783 yards. Smith trails T.C. Hicks (3,198) by 415 yards on the all-time list after passing Gary Marshall (2,731) in last Saturday's contest. His season total is just 167 yards shy of the Peacock single-season record held by Mike Hatten, who tallied 1,426 yards in 2000. Smith's rushing yards and rushing yards/game rank 6th in the country and 2nd in the NSIC. Smith is also ranked 17th nationally in rushing touchdowns (11), 19th in all-purpose yards per game (168.4) and 48th in scoring per game (8.3).

20/20 VISION... Redshirt junior Cole Jaeschke set a new personal-best for touchdown throws in last week's game with 6 to reach a season total of 20. Saturday's tally was one short of UIU's record, which was set by Dedrick Sykes (7) versus Dubuque in 2003. UIU's quarterback is leading the NSIC in passing yards and passing yards/game and is second in completions/game, passing touchdowns and total offense. On the national scene Jaeschke is ranked 10th in passing yards (2,432), 12th in passing yards/game (304), 16th in passing touchdowns (20), 17th in completions/game (24.5), 20th in total offense (309.5), 26th in points responsible for (130), 31st in points responsible/game (16.3), 41st in completion percentage (61.3%), and 48th in passing efficiency (138.2).
IN THE TRENCHES... Smith, Jaeschke, Lucas Hefty, Derek Giesking and the rest of the receivers have benefited from a consistent and very effective offensive line for Upper Iowa all season. The O-line has led the way on the year as the group is ranked 15th in the nation in total offense with over 500 yards per game. The UIU offense is even deadlier on first down where they average the 8th most yards in the country at 215 per game.
STRONG UP THE MIDDLE... Seniors Ethan Douglas and Jordan Andera have been putting together special seasons in their final run through the NSIC. Douglas, the Peacocks leading tackler, has 71 stops (79th NCAA, 8th NSIC) with 40 (73rd NCAA, 5th NSIC) coming on his own and 10 behind the line of scrimmage (65th NCAA, 4th NSIC). Andera enters the weekend with 53 tackles (31st NSIC) including 35 solos (14th NSIC) and 2 for loss; he also has one interception.
