This Week in Peacock Football... For the first time since 1994, the Upper Iowa football team enters week five of a season with a 3-1 mark. The Peacocks found success on both offense and defense as they played half of the teams from the NSIC North Division to open their 2013 campaign. Now the season turns to divisional play and the Peacocks will kick off their march through the NSIC South in Winona, Minn. The Warriors of Winona State University will host UIU in a 6 p.m. game. Both teams boast high-flying offenses and if last year's second half was an indication of things to come then fans in Winona are in for quite a battle. Winona State comes into the game with a 2-2 mark with losses to Bemidji State University and #18 St. Cloud State Huskies, while UIU's only blemish thus far was to #11 Minnesota Duluth.

The Series... Winona State has claimed all nine meetings with Upper Iowa including seven victories since Upper Iowa moved up to NCAA Divsion II and joined the NSIC. The Warriors and Peacocks locked up in a shootout on UIU's homecoming weekend last season as WSU was able to edge the home team, 45-42. The Warriors jumped out to a 28-7 lead, but a late second quarter touchdown pulled the margin within two scores at halftime. In the second half, Upper Iowa outscored their guests 28-17 but a final drive for the home team stalled at midfield leaving the Peacocks three points shy of the upset.

Top Ten... UIU signal caller Cole Jaeschke is now at the top of ten Peacock passing and offensive records. Last week, the Moorland, Iowa native passed Jesse Willis' (1995-98) career total of touchdown passes of 48 setting the new record at 50. Jaeschke also passed Jeff Roth's (1989-92) career passing yards mark of 6,379 extending the new mark out to 6,664 yards after 3 touchdowns and 317 yards versus U-Mary at home. Nationally, the redshirt junior is ranked 14th in passing touchdowns (11), 15th in passing yards (1,236), 16th in passing yards per game (309), 23rd in points responsible per game (18.5), 28th in completions per game (23.3), 31st in total offense per game (307.3), 33rd in passing efficiency (149.7) and 43rd in completion percentage (62.4%). Jaeschke is at the top of three NSIC categories including passing touchdowns, passing yards and passing yards/game, and he is second in five other categories.

21 Questions… Junior running back Chris Smith (#21) is back in form for Upper Iowa coming off two of the best performances of the last two years. The Brown Deer, Wis. product spent much of the 2012 campaign battling injuries. Smith was the NSIC's Newcomer and Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2011. After earning a NSIC Offensive Player of the Week award following his 202-yard, 2-touchdown performance at Northern State University, Smith backed it up with 187 yards and two more touchdowns in UIU's impressive win over the University of Mary. Nationally, he is ranked 7th in rushing yards (597), 8th in rushing yards per game (149.3), 12th in rushing touchdowns (7), 19th in scoring per game (10.5), 34th in all-purpose yards per game (150) and 92nd in points responsible for (42). Smith is second in the NSIC in rushing yards total and per game and is third in rushing touchdowns and scoring per game. The tailback surpassed the 2,000 yard rushing plateau last week and sits in 8th place all-time in UIU's history needing only 58 yards to move up to 6th.
