Recap

Minnesota State defeated Upper Iowa, 3-1, on Tuesday night in Mankato, Minn. The Mavericks and Peacocks split the first two sets of the match, before MSU claimed the final two sets and earn the victory. The two Northern Sun members met in a non-conference tilt.

The Mavericks registered a 25-17 win in set one with 18 kills while holding the Peacocks to only 8 kills.

In the second set, Upper Iowa's offense lit up the scoreboard with 17 kills and a .517 hitting percentage thanks to just a pair of attack errors. UIU and MSU were tied at 10-10, when the Peacocks used a 7-3 run to claim an advantage that they would not surrender heading into the break.

The home team dominated the third set posting a 25-13 win as the UIU offense cooled in the locker room. Upper Iowa hit 10 attack errors with only 9 kills, while the Mavericks hit .370 with 12 kills and just 2 errors.

The fourth set went back and forth on the way to a 20-20 tie late in the action. Early in the set, the Peacocks scored five straight points to take a 7-4 lead. Midway through the set, MSU used a 5-0 run to get ahead 17-14. Three straight kills by UIU forced sideouts and knotted the score at 18, 19 and 20. Minnesota State ended the set and match by scoring five of the final six points for a 25-21 win.

The service line prooved to be a major factor as Minnesota State recorded 9 aces, while Upper Iowa just had 2 serves score on the night. The .209 hitting average for UIU was the team's highest average since Sept. 27, which covers the Peacocks' current 11-match losing streak.

Next Up

Upper Iowa will welcome the Beavers of Minot State University to Dorman Gym on Friday at 7 p.m. The Peacocks will then host the Marauders of the University of Mary on Satruday at 3 p.m. prior to the UIU football game with the University of Sioux Falls.
