This Week in Peacock Volleyball… Upper Iowa (6-14, 2-9 NSIC) will play three times this week as they look to snap their current seven-game skid. The Peacocks will travel to Winona, Minn. for an early-week match on Tuesday against the Warriors of Winona State University. UIU defeated Winona State in Fayette on Sept. 24 in five sets. The team will stay on the road for their weekend action with matches at Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University on Friday and Saturday. Winona State comes into the Tuesday match with a 7-13 mark overall and a 4-7 mark in the NSIC. MSU Moorhead has won two of their last three matches and sits at 12-7 overall and 5-6 in the conference, while Northern State has won five straight and six of their last seven to reach a 15-3 record overall and an 8-3 mark in the Northern Sun. The Wolves cracked the top-25 for the first time this season in Monday's AVCA Division II poll at #25.
Last Week for the Warriors... Katie Froehle (OH, Sr., 5-10, Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Warrior offensive attack, posting 27 kills and 35 digs as the Warrior split its matchups this weekend. Froehle had 12 kills and 13 digs to start the weekend against Augustana before posting 15 kills and 22 digs in the Warriors' win over No. 15 Wayne State. Froehle hit .213 on the weekend. The senior added three aces, getting all three during a WSU run that put away Wayne State Saturday. Bekah Saugen (OH, Sr., 5-10, Chaska, Minn.) helped pace the Winona State defense, leading the team with 41 total digs, a 5.86 per game average. The senior had 13 digs against Augustana before posting a team-high 28 in a victory over No. 15 Wayne State. Saugen also had five total blocks in the two games. Saugen was a strong contributor to the Warrior offensive effort, totaling 25 kills in the two games. Elena Kruese (S, Sr., 5-9, Grafton, Wis.) paced the Warrior offense with 42 assists, averaging 6.00 assists per set. The senior had 15 assists against Augustana before handing out a team-high 27 in a win over No. 15 Wayne State. Kruesel also had 22 digs and two assists to help the Warrior cause.
Last Week for the Dragons... Kaitlin VanWinkle (MB, 5-11, So. / Farmington, Minn. / Lakeville South HS) had a solid week for the Dragons in helping them to a 1-1 mark on the road. She finished with 20 kills, including 16 in a four-set road win at St. Cloud State on Saturday. She averaged 2.86 kills per set. She also had a good week defensively at the net with 13 total blocks (four solo, nine assists). Casie Baer (S, 5-8, So., Canby, Minn. / Canby HS), after missing two weekends with an injury, made a successful return to the Dragons' two-setter attack last weekend and helped the team to a 1-1 mark. She had 39 set assists, averaging 5.57 per set, and also added 10 digs. Amber Krenske (L/DS, 5-7, So., Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) had 39 digs in two matches last week, including 28 in a four-set win over St. Cloud State on Saturday. Krenske averaged 7.0 digs per set in that match, and averaged 5.57 for the week. Despite missing seven matches with an injury, Krenske is second on the team with 228 digs.
Last Week for the #25 Wolves... Kelsey Chambers (So., Jordan, Minn., Jordan HS) led the Wolves with 35 kills (5 per set) and hit .405 over the weekend as Northern State swept St. Cloud State and also upset No. 2 Minnesota Duluth 3-1 on Saturday. The win over UMD was the Wolves' first against the Bulldogs since 2000. Chambers also had eight total blocks and 16 digs in the two matches. Against St. Cloud, Chambers hit an incredible career-high .621 in the sweep and didn't record a single attack error in the match. Drew Smith, So., Ames, Iowa, Ames HS totaled 88 total assists over the weekend (12.6 per set) in NSU's two wins. Smith also recorded 18 digs and five blocks in the two matches. Set up a Wolves offense that hit .369 against SCSU and had just six attack errors. In the upset over UMD, Smith recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she registered 48 assists and 12 digs in the victory. Northern hit .312 as a team over the weekend thanks to Smith's work.
