The #15 Wildcats of Wayne State College defeated the Peacock volleyball team tonight in straight sets. Upper Iowa was outplayed in the first two sets by scores of 25-10 and 25-14 before dropping a hard fought third set by a 25-23 count. The loss marks the sixth straight for UIU including three at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents.
The Peacock attack had trouble getting started on the night, while the Wildcats came out on fire from the start. The visitors hit .312 in the first set and .382 in the second set, while the home squad hit a negative percentage (-.030) in the first and .077 in the second.
The Peacocks took six more attack attempts than the Wildcats through the first two sets, but could not convert like their guests. Wayne State claimed an advantage of 25-17 in kills, but only committed two errors, while Upper Iowa made 15 errors on the attack.
In the third set, Upper Iowa played well and matched Wayne State point-for-point. The Peacocks held several leads in the night's final set, but never by more than two points. The final two-point advantage came when senior
Melanie Behnke slammed a kill off the hands of a Wildcat defender giving UIU a 22-20 lead. Wayne State rallied and scored five of the final six points in the match to claim the set and the match.
