The Peacocks have opened the NSIC season with a 2-0 mark thanks to wins over U-Mary, 36-9, and Minot State (40-11). Thursday night the Peacocks travel to Mankato, Minn. to face the #13 Mavericks of Minnesota State in a 7 p.m. dual in the Taylor Center.
Peacocks in the Polls... Upper Iowa is currently ranked #6 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll and five individuals are also ranked in the top 8 in the nation. The ranked Peacocks are Trevor Franklin (133, #2), Wade Gobin (165, #4), Blake Sorensen (174, #8), Mitch Schultz (184, #6), and Carl Broghammer (197, #1).
Sizing Up the Mavericks... Minnesota State, ranked #13 along with former top-ranked Nebraska Kearney, comes into the NSIC dual with a 2-0 record in conference action having also defeated U-Mary and Minot State. The Mavericks are led by four nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 165-lbs, sophomore
Cody Quinn moved up to No. 3, while senior
Aaron Norgren is ranked fifth at 184-lbs. Juniors
David Demo (125 lbs) and
Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs) are both ranked sixth in their respective weight classes. Demo, Quinn and Eichmann are all the highest ranked NSIC wrestlers in the individual weight classes.
Dropping the “Hammer”... Carl Broghammer earned a pair of wins by fall last week to improve to 30-2 on the season. Broghammer pinned Kriss McCleary of U-Mary (2:06) on Thursday night and followed up with a pin of Joe Johnson (Minot State) in just 1:07 on Sunday. His 15 pins this season rank him third in the country among all divisions with his teammate, Bryce Lumzy. His only two losses are against a pair of Division I foes and he has now won 15 straight matches.
How the Peacocks wrestled last week... Upper Iowa (6-2, 2-0) opened this year’s NSIC schedule with two wins. UIU won 15 of the 20 matches wrestled in Dorman including seven over U-Mary (36-9) and eight against Minot State (40-11). Chris Paulus (125, 2-0), Trevor Franklin (133, #2 NCAA, 1-0), Tanner Schmidt (133, 1-0), Bryce Lumzy (157, 2-0), Wade Gobin (165, #4 NCAA, 2-0), Blake Sorensen (174, #8 NCAA, 2-0) and Carl Broghammer (197, #1 NCAA, 2-0) all went undefeated on the week. Matt Paulus, Jordan Rinken and Jeremy Brazil all went 1-1. The Peacocks are leading the nation, thru all divisions, in pins this season with 127; UIU recorded nine wins by fall in the last two duals.
How the Mavericks wrestled last week... Minnesota State (5-2, 2-0) opened conference action by going 2-0 on the weekend…MSU defeated U-Mary 26-13 on Friday and shut-out NSIC-newcomer Minot State 54-0…This was the first-ever meeting between MSU and MISU…Seven Mavericks went 2-0 on the weekend including junior No. 6 David Demo (125 lbs), freshman Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs), freshman Sawyer Hoffman (157 lbs), sophomore No. 3 Cody Quinn (165 lbs), junior No. 6 Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs), senior Nathan Haynes (197 lbs) and junior Corby Running (285 lbs).
Who's Next... Upper Iowa will host the Wolves of Northern State in a NSIC dual on Sunday, Jan. 27, at home in Fayette. The dual will begin at 2 p.m. and the wrestling program will welcome back their former brothers for the UIU Wrestling Alumni Day.
