A matchup of top-fifteen ranked teams took place in Mankato, Minn. Thursday night. The No. 13 Mavericks of Minnesota State upset the No. 6 Peacocks, 21-15, thanks to six wins including one by fall. Upper Iowa’s four wins on the night included three decisions and one by fall. The loss dropped UIU’s record to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC, while MSU improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
After a tight 2-0 loss by
Chris Paulus in the 125 pound match,
Trevor Franklin (133, #2 NCAA) tied the dual, 3-3, with a win. The two-time National Champion was able to edge Alphonso Vruno by a point, 4-3.
The Mavericks got a big bonus-point win at 141 pounds as
Matt Paulus was pinned near the end of the second period. Paulus was leading 5-0 after the first period, but got caught in a reversal and was pinned at the 4:40 mark.
Thanks to a pair of decisions at 149 and 157, the Peacocks were able to tie the dual once again, 9-9.
Jordan Rinken won a 5-2 decision at 149 and
Bryce Lumzy earned a controlling 8-1 decision at 157.
Minnesota State took control of the dual with three straight wins at 165, 174 and 184 pounds.
Wade Gobin (#4 NCAA) dropped a close 2-1 decision as each wrestler got an escape, but a ride-time point made the difference.
Blake Sorensen lost 5-2 in the 174 pound match, while
Brock Gobin was defeated 10-4 at 184 pounds.
Carl Broghammer (#1 NCAA) hopped into the circle for the 197 pound match knowing that with UIU trailing by nine on the scoreboard, anything less than a win by fall would make it difficult to pull off the victory. The redshirt junior wasted little time scoring a takedown and worked hard on his opponent to turn him over and get the pin just over two minutes into the match. The win by fall was Broghammer’s 16th of the season and also improved his win streak to 16 matches.
The Peacocks turned to
Jeremy Brazil in the heavyweight matchup looking to complete the late rally. Brazil earned an escape in the second period, but Corby Running picked up an escape to tie in the third period. MSU earned the match and dual win with a takedown in the first sudden victory period. The 3-1 win gave the Mavericks a 21-15 upset over the Peacocks.
