UPPER IOWA MATCH NOTES
This Week in Wrestling... Fresh off a sixth place finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Springfield, Illinois last week, the Peacocks return to continue Stormin’ Dorman Week at Upper Iowa. UIU will host the Marauders of the University of Mary at 7 p.m. Thursday night and then welcome the Beavers of Minot State University on Sunday for a 2 p.m. dual. Upper Iowa is celebrating a Wounded Warrior/Military Appreciation Day on Sunday; all active and former military personnel with a military ID and their families will receive free admission to the dual.
Get Your Peacock Gear... The Peacock wrestling team will be wearing commemorative camouflage singlets for the dual (shown above). Two singlets will be raffled off during the dual. Raffle tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.
Peacocks in the Polls... Upper Iowa is currently ranked #6 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll and five individuals are also ranked in the top 8 in the nation. The ranked Peacocks are Trevor Franklin (133, #2), Wade Gobin (165, #4), Blake Sorensen (174, #8), Mitch Schultz (184, #6), and Carl Broghammer (197, #1).
Last Week for the Marauders... Brock Krumm (165, So., Bismarck, ND) pulled out an impressive win in the final seconds of the Marauders dual at Concordia College last week, the 11th rankled team in NCAA Division III. Krumm improved to 12-6 overall with the win and is 3-0 in duals this year. The Marauders won five matches against the Cobbers but suffered a narrow 20-18 loss. All-American Trevor Johnson (141, Jr., Bismarck, ND) improved his season mark to 22-4 with a pin.
Last Week for the Beavers... The Beavers competed in their first ever NWCA National Duals and went 0-3 on the weekend, extending their losing streak to nine straight duals. MISU faced one of the toughest teams in the nation, #3 Central Oklahoma falling 44-0 in the first round. MISU then fell to Limestone College 28-17 and No. 13 Augustana College 39-15. Matt Fetterley was 2-1, while Bobby Bartz also picked up two wins, one by forfeit and one by fall. The Beavers will face #9 Minnesota State on Saturday prior to competing against UIU.
Dropping the “Hammer”... Redshirt junior Carl Broghammer has put together an outstanding season so far. He is coming off a great weekend in which he went 5-0 at the National Duals with three falls and a major decision. The Manchester, Iowa native is currently 28-2. His only two losses came at the UNI Open against Big Ten opponents. He has 13 wins by fall, 1 by tech fall and 7 major decisions and is currently on a 13-match win streak. Broghammer is a perfect 10-0 against NCAA DII opponents.
