This Week in Peacock Football... Upper Iowa will look to remove the taste of last week’s loss on Saturday as they host St. Cloud State University for the Grand Opening of Harms-Eischeid Stadium.  The lights will be on for the Peacocks’ first home night game in program history.  Both teams are hunting for their first win of the season after Bemidji State defeated UIU 25-23 and Sioux Falls upset St. Cloud State 32-19.  Upper Iowa will host a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Harms-Eischeid Stadium at 3 p.m. on Saturday.  The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony, which will feature a tailgate reception, includes Steve Harms, Co-Chair of the Transforming UIU Capital Campaign, and UIU President Dr. Alan Walker as speakers, as well as Bob Firth, chair of the UIU Board, Mike Racy, NCAA Division II Vice President, and Butch Raymond, commissioner of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  Following the game, a Parade of Lights will take place and a fireworks show will complete the night on Main Street in downtown Fayette.

Radio...
Upper Iowa Peacock football can be heard throughout the 2012 season courtesy of AM 950 KOEL. Play-by-play announcer Joe Stasi is in his tenth season as the “Voice of the Peacocks.” He will be joined on the broadcast by Zach Carlyle, a sophomore sports communication major at UIU.  The pre-game show is scheduled for 5:40 p.m.

The Series... Since Upper Iowa’s move up to NCAA Division II, St. Cloud State University has claimed both meetings.  The Huskies won the first matchup in 2008 in St. Cloud, Minn. by a 54-28 count and then posted a 57-10 victory over the Peacocks in Fayette in 2009.  The Peacocks lone win in the match up was in 1949; UIU posted a 23-20 victory.

No Sophomore Slump…  Cole Jaeschke returns as the Peacock signal caller this season and the sophomore from Moorland, Iowa is off to a great start.  Last week, he threw for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns posting a passing efficiency of 195.2, which ranks him 9th best in the nation and 4th in the Northern Sun.

Vote for Bradley…  Redshirt junior running back Raymond Bradley rushed for 128 yards in his first appearance for the Peacock blue and white.  Bradley’s big day included a 53-yard run as the back averaged 7.5 yards per carry.  He is tied for 18th nationally and is second in the NSIC for rushing yards.

Strong up the Middle…  Senior Tony Leggett and junior Ethan Douglas led the Peacock defense at Bemidji State with a dozen tackles each.  The pair of linebackers pose quite a threat to opponent’s offenses and are tied for 29th nationally and 6th in the conference in tackles.

Hefty, Hefty, Hefty…  Sophomore tight end Lucas Hefty was the main target for Jaeschke last Friday night pulling in 9 receptions for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  His nine grabs are tied for 15th in the country and led all NSIC receivers in week one.  Hefty’s yardage ranks 51st in the nation and 8th in the NSIC, while his two scores are tied for 25th nationally and tied for 3rd in the Northern Sun.

Enter “Saund”-man... Redshirt junior Ethan Saunders registered his best day in an Upper Iowa uniform as he sacked the Bemidji State quarterback twice and recorded six more tackles.  The two sacks were tied for 8th most in the country  and tied for first in the NSIC last week.

Laces Out... Redshirt junior punter Evan Knowlton set up the Peacock defense for success in week one with a 43.4 yard average per punt, which ranks 14th in the nation and 4th in the NSIC.  Senior kicker Steven Sandoval converted both extra point attempts last week and nailed a 35-yard field goal to record his first five points of the 2012 season.
