After dropping the first set of tonight’s NSIC contest, the Peacocks rallied for the win thanks to three-straight set victories. On a night when the Peacock offense did not hit on all cylinders, the defense led the home team to a 3-1 win. UIU recorded 90 digs and 9 team blocks to support the offense.
UIU is now 5-0 this season in Dorman Gym. Minnesota, Crookston falls 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC, while Upper Iowa improves to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Neither team hit the ball well on the offensive end in the first set. The Peacocks trailed early on 15-8, but used an 8-1 run to tie the set at 16. Both teams hit below .120 as they went back and forth the rest of the set; neither team led by more than two points. In the end, the Golden Eagles took the set 27-25.
The Peacocks raced out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back in the second set. Upper Iowa hit .233 while holding their guests to a .033 average. UIU tied the match thanks to the 25-12 win.
Upper Iowa used the momentum they gained from the second set to outlast Minnesota, Crookston in the third and fourth sets. Both teams continued to struggle on offense as attack errors mounted. The Peacocks won the third set 25-23 and held on for a 25-22 win in the fourth set to win the match three sets to one.
Melanie Behnke led the Peacocks convincingly with 19 kills, while
Kayla Wagner and
Maryn Fulton followed with 9 and 7 kills, respectively.
Hailey Brown set up the Peacock offense with 32 assists and added 17 digs and 6 kills to her stat line. On the defensive end,
Amanda Weiss led Upper Iowa in digs with 26, while three others reached double figures. At the net, Fulton blocked 5 balls while teammate’s Wagner and
Tyann Caspers rejected 4 apiece.
The Peacocks will welcome the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m. at Dorman Gym.
