This Week in Peacock Football... Upper Iowa will be looking for their third consecutive victory this Saturday when they host the Warriors of Winona State University at Harms-Eischeid Stadium. This NSIC matchup kicks off play for both schools in the NSIC South Division. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. followed by an Upper Iowa volleyball game versus Bemidji State University. UIU capitalized on seven Minot State turnovers last week for a 26-20 triumph over the Beavers, while Winona State defeated the University of Mary, 32-23, on the road. The Peacock offense is ranked third best in the NSIC through the air picking up an average of 282 yards per game. While the Warriors boast the third highest scoring offense averaging 37 points a game.
Radio... Upper Iowa Peacock football can be heard throughout the 2012 season courtesy of AM 950 KOEL. Play-by-play announcer Joe Stasi is in his tenth season as the “Voice of the Peacocks.” He will be joined on the broadcast by Zach Carlyle, a sophomore sports communication major at UIU. The pre-game show is scheduled for 12:40 p.m.
The Series... Today’s game marks the first NSIC South Division game for either team. Winona State has claimed all eight meetings with Upper Iowa including six victories since Upper Iowa moved up to NCAA Divsion II and joined the NSIC. The Warriors hosted a 72-31 win last season in Winona, Minn. The Peacocks scored 28 points and picked up the majority of their 451 yards of offense in the second half.
“Kea” to the Peacocks... Redshirt sophomore Keaton Hosch returned a kick for a touchdown for the second straight week and gave Upper Iowa the separation they needed from Minot State last week. Hosch pulled in a 48-yard touchdown pass to tie the score early and then added a 93-yard punt return that gave the Peacocks a 17-7 lead. Hosch is 29th in the nation and 4th in the conference with 92 receiving yards per game and also ranks 16th nationally and first in the NSIC in all-purpose yards with 168 per game.
“Cole” as the other side of the pillow… Cole Jaeschke is having a great redshirt sophomore season. Last week, the Moorland, Iowa native threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Jaeschke has posted a passing efficiency of 149.8 through the first four games, which ranks him 30th in the nation and 2nd in the Northern Sun. He has now thrown for 3,541 yards in his career and sits in sixth place on the all-time list; just 301 yards behind Matt Walshire.

Douglas & Leggett, LB, Inc… Junior Ethan Douglas and senior Tony Leggett are at the top of every offensive coordinator’s list of worries when it comes to game planning versus the Peacocks. Douglas leads the UIU defense with 48 tackles and following closely behind is Leggett with 44 tackles. Douglas ranks 6th in the nation and 3rd in the NSIC with 12 tackles per game, while Leggett is 17th nationally and 6th in conference play with 11 per contest. Nearly half of the duo’s tackles have been solo stops.
Hefty, Hefty, Hefty… Sophomore receiver Lucas Hefty continues to be a huge outlet for Jaeschke after reeling in three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown against Minot State last week. His 24 grabs are tied for 48th in the country and is tied for the lead for all NSIC receivers. Hefty’s yardage ranks 84th in the nation and tied for 9th in the NSIC, while his seven scores are tied for 13th nationally and tied for 3rd in the Northern Sun.
