Ranger Rally Dooms Peacocks

Wisconsin-Parkside found themselves down two sets to one, but the Rangers rallied to claim a nonconference win over the Peacocks. Upper Iowa ran away with the third set, however UWP won a tightly contested fourth set and then outlasted UIU in the final set. With the win, the Rangers improve to 10-4 while the Peacocks drop to 8-6. The match was played at Sauk Prairie High School in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin.

In the first set, Wisconsin-Parkside outhit Upper Iowa .343 to .132 including a 16-12 advantage in kills. The Rangers controlled the first set and held off a Peacock rally to win 25-21.

UIU bounced back with a 25-20 win in the second set after holding UW-Parkside to just 8 kills.

The third set saw the Peacocks dominate on both sides. While the offense was hitting on all cylinders with 13 kills, the defense forced 8 errors and turned several Ranger attacks away with blocks. The 25-12 win gave Head Coach Aaron Nelson the opportunity to play the freshman Alison Halweg in her high school gym.

UWP, despite trailing two sets to one, was determined to extend the match to five. The teams battled back and forth, neither team able to gain a large advantage. The Rangers pulled away at the end of the set, taking four of the final five points, and earned the win, 25-22.

In the deciding set, UW-Parkside built an 8-5 lead before the teams switched sides. When play resumed, the Rangers grabbed seven of the final ten points and claimed the 15-8 set victory. The difference in the final set came down to hitting percentage with Upper Iowa hitting only .038 and UWP controlling the tempo of the match with a .316 percentage.

Leading the attack for the Peacocks was Melanie Behnke with 16 kills and Jennifer Mundt with 14. Hailey Brown set up the attack with 48 assists. On defense, Amanda Weiss dug up 21 balls while Danielle Gernes tallied 18 and Emily Sparks chipped in with 11. The Peacock middles, Kayla Wagner and Maryn Fulton, recorded eight and four blocks respectively, while Brown added six.

UIU will welcome the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Friday at 7 p.m. and then host the Beavers of Bemidji State University Saturday at 5 p.m.
