Box Score
History is on the verge of being broken. After a 2-0 victory over Wayne State College on Saturday, the Upper Iowa women’s soccer team tied the school record with 12 wins in a season. With one more win – and the team has three more chances in the regular season and at least one chance in the playoffs – the Peacocks will be in sole possession of the record and will be recognized as one of the best teams to play at UIU.
All year long different players have stepped up for the Peacocks when the game is on the line. This time, it was junior midfielder
Brooke Skaggs, who recorded her first collegiate goal to give UIU a 1-0 lead just before halftime of Saturday’s match against the Wildcats.
Skaggs, who had only taken two shots coming into the match, was inside the penalty box when senior forward
Elizabeth Kaluzinski took a corner kick in the 39th minute. The Robins, Iowa native jumped and headed a ball into the back of the net to give UIU a 1-0 lead.
The Peacocks took that lead into halftime, but from the start, the Wildcats struggled on offense and any lead seemed to be enough for a Peacock victory. WSC attempted just six total shots against a stingy UIU defense, compared to 12 first half shots and 23 total shots for the visiting Peacocks.
Not satisfied with a slim lead, UIU forward
Jill Schechinger added an insurance goal in the 53rd minute to extend the Peacock lead to 2-0. The sophomore forward was the beneficiary of a
Kali Loescher pass and assist as Schechinger scored her fourth goal of the 2012 season. It was Loescher's second assist this season.
Peacock goalkeeper
Amanda Smith needed just three saves to earn her 11th shutout of the season. The junior from Moline, Illinois now has 55 total saves through 15 matches in 2012.
UIU will look to break the school record for wins on Sunday as they travel west to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to take on Augustana in another NSIC match. The Peacocks, who sit at 12-2-1 overall and 10-2-1 in the NSIC, will begin action at 1 p.m.
The Vikings fell to Winona State at home, 1-0, on Saturday and Augustana now stands at 4-9-2 overall and 3-7-2 in conference play.
