Winona State dominated today’s football game with Upper Iowa thanks to a massive advantage in total offense and big plays. The Warriors posted a 72-31 victory as the teams’ opened their NSIC South Division schedule this evening in Winona, Minn. With the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC.
The Warriors got out to a 37-0 lead with five minutes to play in the second quarter thanks to scores on each of their first six possessions in the opening half including five touchdowns and a field goal.
Once Upper Iowa got on the board prior to half, they began to gain their stride on offense, but the Warrior offense would not be slowed. From the middle of the second quarter on, Winona State outscored the Peacocks by a 35-31 margin.
Steven Sandoval put the Peacocks on the board with 31 seconds in the first half with a 28-yard field goal.
In the second half, Upper Iowa converted four touchdowns on their seven possessions including touchdowns on a 76-yard touchdown pass and catch from
Cole Jaeschke to
Jessie Hubbard, a Jaeschke 5-yard run, a
Marcus West 7-yard run over the goal line, and a second 5-yard quarterback keeper by Jaeschke.
Winona State amassed 677 yards of total offense with 376 yards rushing and 301 yards passing, while Upper Iowa picked up 451 yards of offense with 179 yards rushing and 272 yards passing.
For the Peacocks, Jaeschke completed 18 of his 33 pass attempts for 272 yards and a touchdown, but did throw his first interception of the season. Hubbard caught 5 passes for 153 yards and a score, while
Jordan Otdoerfer and West ran for 76 and 49 yards, respectively.
Tony Leggett led the Peacock defense with 10 tackles, while
Jordan Andera made 8 tackles.
Upper Iowa will host the Beavers of Bemidji State University next Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m. The Beavers came into this week’s matchup with the #11 Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth as the #24 team in the country.
