Warriors Outlast Peacocks in Five Set Battle

Winona State 3 - Upper Iowa 2 (25-14, 20-25, 25-18, 18-25, 15-10)

The Warriors of Winona State continued on their hot streak tonight pushing their winning streak to three straight matches after outlasting the Peacocks in a five set battle in Fayette.  Winona State and Upper Iowa traded blows with each of the four sets being won in commanding fashion.  In the final set, the Warriors turned to Kathy Lohff and she came through with 6 kills to push the visitors over the top.  After the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC, while Winona State improves to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference matches.

The Warriors owned the first and third sets winning by scores of 25-14 and 25-18.  The visitors hit .held the Peacock hitters to .152 and .080 hitting in those sets.  Upper Iowa rallied to tie the match in both the second and fourth sets largely in part to a dramatic rise in their hitting percentages.  In the victorious sets, the home team hit .394 and .293, respectively.

Lohff, who came into the final set with six kills for the night, took over and converted assist after assist for Kayla Uhlenhake and the Warriors.  UIU was within two points at 8-6 when the teams switched benches in the final set, but just couldn't solve their guest's attack over the final points.

The service line proved to be the downfall of the Peacocks as the home team missed on 13 serves handing the ball and points to the Warriors.  Winona State recorded just six serving errors.

Sara Vance led the Peacock offense in the loss with 16 kills, while Nicky Brown and Kristy Hinrichs tallied 15 and 12, respectively.  Kayla Wagner added 8 and Maryn Fulton chipped in 5.  Skylar Lesan paced the attack with 48 assists and added 3 kills.

Four Peacocks registered double digit digs on the night including Vance (16), Danielle Gernes (16), Hinrichs (13), and Brown (10). 

The Peacocks and Warriors will meet again this coming Friday in Winona, Minn.  The two teams will hit the court for their NSIC rematch at 7 p.m.
