The Peacock volleyball won their seventh match of the season in Dorman Gym this evening and kicked off Upper Iowa's 2011 Homecoming weekend with a bang. The home team won a pair of close sets with the Vikings of Augustana and then dominated their guests in the third set to complete the sweep and improve to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC.
In the first set, the Peacocks out hit the Vikings .262 to .235 to edge out a 26-24 win. Augie came out strong in the second set leading by an early 6-3 count thanks to three straight service aces, but the Peacocks took a deep breath and fought back to take the set prior to intermission by a 25-23 score. After the break, UIU came out on fire and dominated with their attack. The Peacocks hit .542 in the final set thanks to 14 kills and just one error.
For the match the team hit .294 led by their three seniors;
Nicky Brown (12 kills),
Kristy Hinrichs (11 kills), and
Sara Vance (10 kills).
Kayla Wagner added 6 kills in the middle.
Skylar Lesan set up the attack with 36 assists for the night. The Peacock defense was spearheaded by Vance, who registered 15 digs, while
Maryn Fulton got her hands on 1 solo block and 4 more assisted blocks.
Upper Iowa will return to Prochaska Court tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. for a match against the #10 Wildcats of Wayne State College.
