This Week in Peacock Football...
Upper Iowa will return to northeast Iowa this week for a match up with the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul. The Peacocks are coming off a loss in a wild, shootout that ended in overtime at Wayne State College last week, 44-41. UIU’s offense will look to push their streak of 500+ yards in total offense to three straight games this week, while the defense will look to contain Golden Bear quarterback Spencer Ohm, who leads the second best passing offense in the NSIC with 277.4 yards per game. Concordia comes into the game having defeated Minnesota, Crookston 38-20 at home last Saturday. CU is 4-5 overall, 3-5 in the NSIC and 1-3 in the NSIC South Division.
The Series...
Concordia has won all five match ups with the Peacocks; the annual meeting has occured since 2006. After the Golden Bears dominated the first contest, 41-14, CU and UIU had three close games, but the Peacocks continued to come up on the short end. Upper Iowa lost 20-17 in 2007 and 23-14 in 2008 before dropping a wild 57-56 double overtime game in Fayette in 2009. Last year, Concordia beat Upper Iowa on Senior Day in St. Paul, 56-7.
Last Meeting...
The CU Golden Bears posted touchdowns on five of their six first half possessions on their way to a dominating win, 56-7.
Spencer Ohm stole the show for Concordia with 326 yards and 3 touchdowns on 21 completions. Sam Campbell added 95 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Charles Gilbert hauled in 4 catches for 137 yards and two scores.
UIU linebackers Ethan Douglas and Tony Leggett combined for 25 tackles; Leggett also had an interception.
Mr. Smith Making his Mark…
Chris Smith was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after posting huge rushing yards in back to back weeks. Smith rushed for 287 yards and two scores last week after picking up 230 yards and a score the week before.
Smith has rushed for over 100 yards in five of the eight ball games he has played in. After sitting out most of the Winona State game and all of the Bemidji State contest, he has returned to the field to rush for 749 yards and four touchdowns on 92 carries over the last four weeks. He now ranks first and fourth in the all-time list of rushing yards in a game around Dave Sanger’s 248 in 1969 and T.C. Hicks’ 233 yards in 2007.
He currently ranks 8th in the country and 2nd in the NSIC for rushing yards per game (135.0). His 1,080 yards this season are fifth best in a season on the all-time list. The record is 1,426 yards in a season set by Mike Hatten in 2000. He has also moved into the top 100 in the nation in all purpose yards per game; Smith is tied for 33rd nationally and is 5th in the NSIC with 140.4 yards/game.
Let the Freshman Lead…
Redshirt freshman quarterback Cole Jaeschke is ranked 31st in the country and 3rd in the NSIC in passing efficiency. He has posted a 139.97 rating through the first nine weeks and is leading the Peacock offense that is ranked 41st in the country and 3rd in the NSIC in total offense (414.1 yards/game). Jaeschke has completed 58.2% of his passes for 1,892 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 75 yards on 42 carries. He ranks 64th in the nation and 5th in the NSIC in total offense at 218.6 yards/game.
Keeping Cole Clean…
The UIU offensive line has kept their young signal caller’s uniform clean this season allowing 10 sacks to rank 17th nationally and 4th in the NSIC in sacks allowed/game.
Catch him if you can…
Senior wideout Jessie Hubbard is enjoying an outstanding senior season averaging 81.67 receiving yards/game which ranks him 41st in the country and 4th in the NSIC. The two-time All-NSIC performer has 34 catches for 735 yards and 6 touchdowns including three long td catches (76 yds. 75 yds. and 60 yds.). Hubbard also has 11 rushes for 50 yards and 22 kick returns for 461 yards. The West Palm Beach, Florida native is second on the Peacocks in all-purpose yards and is 36th in the nation and 6th in the NSIC with 138.4 yards per game.
Strong Up the Middle…
Junior Tony Leggett is leading the defense from his middle linebacker position. After missing a game due to injury, Leggett returned to make 26 tackles over the last two weeks. Leggett’s 88 tackles tie him for 11th nationally and 2nd most in the NSIC with 11.00/game. Sophomore Ethan Douglas is making his presence felt at strong linebacker as well. His 72 tackles are tied for 10th in the NSIC.
Sandoval... Just Kickin’ It…
Junior Steven Sandoval missed his first field goal of the season in overtime last Saturday. His 11 field goals this season are a record at Upper Iowa for consecutive field goals made, field goals made in a season; he has tied Jason Price (2007-10) for the career mark for field goals made. Sandoval has hit 11-12 field goal attempts and all twenty-seven extra point attempts this season. His 60 points tie him for 8th in the NSIC in scoring, while he’s is tied for 20th nationally and 3rd in the NSIC in field goals made/game (1.22).
Knowlton Finding the Groove...
Punter Evan Knowlton has solidified the Peacock punt team. He is currently 86th in the country in net punting with a 31.9 yard average per punt. He is 62nd in the nation in yards per punt with a 38.0 average.
Scouting the Golden Bears...
Senior Charles Gilbert’s touchdown streak came to a close at nine straight games including the first eight games of 2011… senior Spencer Ohm tied a school record with five touchdown passes, throwing three of them to junior tight end Nate Thienes… the three TD’s for Thienes were the first three of his career… Ohm also connected with backup tight end, redshirt freshman Jermaine Clemon for his first career TD… until this week, all of Concordia’s touchdown passes went to their 1-2-3 wide receivers (Gilbert, Tre Mason, Cordell Smith) but Ohm found the TE’s for four strikes, adding a 57-yarder to wideout Tre Mason…
Ohm is two touchdowns shy of 40 for his career and 154 passing yards away from 5,000… senior Sam Campbell had careerhighs with 240 all-purpose yards and 139 rushing yards as he also had 71 receiving yards… senior Al Quaye made 11 tackles, giving him 8 or more tackles in seven straight games as he ranks second in the league with 89 total tackles and has surpassed 300 for his career… freshman Tom Obarski converted a 41-yard field goal, making him 8-11 on the season but he is 7-8 from inside 50 yards including making 4-5 from 40-49 yards.
NSIC Defensive Player of the Week:
#31 Taylor Selby (OLB, 6-0, 230, Sr., Stratford, Wis. / HS / RCTC), for the second straight week, recorded a school record 6 tackles for loss which is also the NSIC single game high in 2011. He led Concordia’s school record 17.0 tackles for loss while holding the nation’s second leading rusher (Richard Haley) to just 96 yards on 27 carries thanks to his game-high 14 tackles. Selby recorded 2.0 sacks for the second straight week, made six quarterback hurries and had a pass breakup – disrupting seven of UMC’s 15 incomplete passes on the day. He also forced three fumbles, including a fourth quarter sack and fumble forced that led a teammate recovery to seal the win on senior day.
Selby leads the league with 18.5 TFL’s, is third in the league with 5.0 sacks and is tied for the league lead with 4 forced fumbles.
