Upper Iowa lost their final game of the 2011 season this afternoon at Ron Wymer Field in West Union, Iowa. The Vikings of Augustana dominated the match up with the Peacocks claiming a 38-7 victory. After three very close losses, UIU was unable to keep up with the Vikings and fell to 3-8 overall and 2-8 in NSIC play this year.
The Peacock offense and defense both started strong on Senior Day, but the Vikings scored a touchdown with just over a minute to play in the first quarter. Augustana added a pair of scores in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead into halftime.
Augie added two more touchdowns in the third quarter including Josh Hanson's third touchdown pass of the afternoon and a fumble recovery returned for a score by Nick Andreas on a high punt snap.
The Peacocks finally got on the board in the fourth quarter when wideout
Jessie Hubbard caught a strike from
Cole Jaeschke on a 36-yard deep out to the back of the endzone. The touchdown was Hubbard's 19th touchdown reception and 20th score in his four year career.
The Vikings put the final points on the scoreboard as the clock wound under seven minutes to play when Drew Behrens hit the only field goal of the game.
Upper Iowa's offense, which had racked up over 500 yards in total offense in three straight games, was held to just 193 yards by the Vikings defense. Augustana held Upper Iowa to just 49 yards rushing on the day.
Hanson threw for 306 yards on 30 completions in 39 attempts for the Vikings with 3 touchdowns, but he was picked off twice. One interception came at the hands of
Keaton Martin and one by
Jeff Arends.
Tony Leggett nearly came up with an interception as well, but the ball was ruled to have touched the ground on his diving attempt.
Ethan Douglas had a big day for UIU recording 15 tackles including 1.5 for loss.
Casey Popenfoose played in his final game and made 12 tackles, while Leggett registered 9.
The Peacocks honored seniors
Kirby Hovden,Hubbard,
Jordan Otdoerfer, Popenfoose,
Rob Zaina,
Tremane Wren and
Nick Lepperd prior to kickoff today.
With the season complete, Upper Iowa will now wait on word from the conference office to hear about All-NSIC honors.
