The Peacock volleyball team bounced back quickly after falling in three sets to the nation's best last night. Upper Iowa claimed the victory in four sets after dropping the opening action. The win gives the team their eleventh win, pushes their NSIC record back to .500 (5-5) and moves the team up to 6th place in the standings.
UIU and SCSU locked up in a back and forth first set that saw the Huskies take a 1-0 lead after grabbing seven of the final ten points. The Peacocks used a 9-3 run in the middle of the second set to post a 25-18 victory. UIU pulled away steadily in the third set for another 25-18 win and then the team jumped out to a commanding lead, 12-3, in the fourth set and held on for the 25-18 win.
Nicky Brown led the attack with 16 kills, while
Kristy Hinrichs posted 12 and
Sara Vance hammered ten home. UIU's middles,
Kayla Wagner and
Maryn Fulton, both hit over .400 and registered 7 kills apiece.
Skylar Lesan recorded 44 assists and 5 kills as well.
Vance and
Danielle Gernes led the defense with 18 digs each and Brown was right behind with 17, while Lesan dug 10 Husky attacks. At the net, Fulton assisted on 7 blocks, while Vance assisted on 5 and Wagner had 1 solo block and 3 assisted blocks.
The Peacocks return home next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15, for a NSIC weekend with the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth and the Beavers of Bemidji State. Friday's match is scheduled for 7 p.m., while Saturday's action will start at 5 p.m. following the UIU football game.
