This Week in Peacock Volleyball…
The Upper Iowa volleyball team is on the road this weekend with matches against #1 Concordia University, St. Paul on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then head west on I-94 to St. Cloud State University for a rematch with the Huskies of St. Cloud State University at 4 p.m. UIU opened their week with a 3-1 win at home versus SCSU to improve to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in NSIC matches.

Thousand-Thousand Club Watch…
Shea Meyermann (2006-09) is the lone member of Upper Iowa’s Thousand-Thousand Club. The UIU alum polished her career off with 1,305 kills and 1,360 digs. Meyermann may not have to wait long for some company in the club though. Sara Vance now sits as the second player in Peacock history to record more than 1,000 kills. With 1,044 kills, the senior from Tampa, Florida needs 51 (949) more digs to receive her membership card to the exclusive club. Nicky Brown also has the potential to reach the milestones. The Farley, Iowa native now has 919 kills and 931 digs.

Scouting the #1 Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul…
The Golden Bears have won 37 straight matches dating back to last season… Since November 9, 2007 Concordia has rattled off 56 straight home victories a span of well over three seasons... No member of the current CU squad has lost a match inside the Gangelhoff Center… Concordia has been one of the best teams in the NSIC for the past several years and are carrying with them a 78 match winning streak in regular season matches. The have gone undefeated in league play for the past three seasons… On the year CU is 15-0 with seven victories coming against ranked teams. They have faced off with the #2, #4, #6, #9, #14 and twice with the #25 team in the nation. Head Coach Brady Starkey has a history of putting his teams up against the best early on, but this may be the toughest start a season since 2008. 2010 marks the fourth straight season Concordia will have played seven matches against top-25 teams before the start of October.
Rematch with the Huskies of St. Cloud State…
Upper Iowa defeated St. Cloud State on Tuesday night in Dorman Gym to the enjoyment of a loud sea of pink. The Peacock volleyball team hosted DIG PINK Night and played the match in honor of those in the Peacock family that are fighting Breast Cancer. Fans supported their efforts by wearing pink and turning out in huge numbers.
After dropping the first set to the Huskies, the Peacocks fired back winning sets two, three and four to claim the victory and improve to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in NSIC play. In set one, the Huskies hit .452 to grab a 25-19 win, but UIU rallied with a 25-20 victory in set two. The home team ran away with the third set, 25-13, outhitting their guests .323 to .118.
In the fourth set, the Huskies dug down and pushed out to leads of 10-6 and 14-10. Upper Iowa continued to rally back and stay within striking distance, but SCSU got to set point first, 24-22. In total, the Peacocks staved off four set points before finally getting ahead, 27-26, and earning their first set and match point.
Skylar Lesan ended a long rally with a kill on the team's second hit that surprised the Huskies and fell to the ground for the final point.
The three senior attackers all took turns as the focus of the offense.
Nicky Brown posted 15 kills, while
Kristy Hinrichs added 14 and
Sara Vance knocked down 12.
Kayla Wagner hit 9 kills to the floor in the middle. Lesan dished out 44 assists and added 3 kills on the night. On the service line, UIU recorded 6 aces including 3 from Vance.
On the defensive side, Vance and Brown each registered 12 digs, while
Danielle Gernes got to 11 digs. At the net,
Maryn Fulton had a solo block and 3 assisted blocks, while Wagner chipped in a solo block and 2 assisted blocks.
