The Saints of Ashford put the Peacocks in a 2-0 hole in tonight's non-conference match in Clinton, Iowa, but Upper Iowa rallied with three straight wins to push their record to 13-9 overall.
The Peacocks dropped the first set, 28-26, and the second set, 19-25, before making a stand and rallying for the win. UIU claimed 25-17, 25-20 and 15-7 wins to complete the comeback.
UIU jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first set, but Ashford rallied with to tie the match at 16-16. The Peacocks had set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but couldn't close the deal as the Saints won 28-26.
UIU had a similar lead, 17-12, in the second set, but Ashford once again rallied for a 25-19 win thanks to a 13-2 run.
Upper Iowa took control in the final three sets as the road team won thanks to consistent hitting and better defensive play. The team made only 12 errors in the final three sets, while forcing the Saints into 20.
Kristy Hinrichs led the offense with 17 kills, while fellow seniors
Nicky Brown, 16 kills, and
Sara Vance, 14 kills, also hit well.
Skylar Lesan handed out 47 assists to a balanced attack.
The UIU defense was led by libero
Danielle Gernes, who registered 31 digs, while
Maryn Fulton picked up 2 solo blocks and 4 assisted blocks.
Upper Iowa will host the #19 Mavericks of Minnesota State on Friday at 7 p.m. and the #9 Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
