The Upper Iowa wrestling team rebounded from their first Northern Sun Conference loss in nearly two full seasons with a 24-13 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University. The #10 Peacocks won seven of the ten matches including one win by fall and six decisions.
The dual began at 125 pounds and Trevor Franklin (#3 NCAA) did what he has always done in an Upper Iowa dual… he posted a victory. Franklin is now 23-0 in Peacock duals after winning by decision, 8-2. Kyle Pedretti (#1 NCAA) pushed the UIU lead to 6-0 when he won by a 10-4 decision.
The Mustangs won by decision at 141, but Colby Kriegel earned his first varsity dual win for UIU with a 6-5 win at 149, while Winston Robbins moved the Peacocks out to a 12-3 lead with a 9-3 decision.
Bryce Lumzy came up with the big win of the night with a first period pin (2:53) of Logan McAlpin. Wade Gobin (174) and Carl Broghammer (197, #6 NCAA) posted the final two wins for Upper Iowa. Gobin won a 7-4 decision, while Broghammer claimed a 9-3 decision.
SMSU claimed wins at 184 and 285. The heavyweight match ended in a win by fall for Brian Rodas just 35 seconds into the match.
Upper Iowa (4-3, 3-1 NSIC) will return home for their next dual on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The Peacocks will welcome the Warriors of Waldorf College for a non-conference dual at 7 p.m.
