Dual Results
The #7 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato won six of the ten matches in tonight's Northern Sun Conference dual, and bonus points supplied a cushion. The #10 Peacocks dropped the dual by a 23-13 count. Minnesota State remains undefeated in the conference at 4-0, while Upper Iowa dropped to 2-1 in NSIC action. The loss marks the first time since Jan. 28, 2009 that UIU has lost in an NSIC dual when the Peacocks were defeated by Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn.
Trevor Franklin continued his impressive win streak in Upper Iowa duals. The 125 pounder, ranked #3, ran his dual record to 22-0 in an Upper Iowa singlet. Franklin won a 3-2 decision over Andy Forstner, ranked #2. The Peacock grappler earned a takedown in the first period and an escape in the third period for the win.
Kyle Pedretti (133, #1 NCAA) gave the Peacocks a 7-0 lead thanks to a major decision win over Skyler Moore. Pedretti scored four takedowns in the first period to take an 8-3 lead into the second period. The Monona, Iowa native added a reversal and another takedown en route to a 14-6 win.
The Mavericks stormed back with a win by fall at 141 when MSU's Robby Fisher pinned UIU's Victor Coronado in the third period (6:02). The fall was followed by a win by decision (6-1) as Jesse Westphal scored four points in the final period to pull away from Trevor Duke at 149.
Winston Robbins gave UIU their final lead of the night at 157 when he defeated Tel Todd by decision 6-3. Robbins moved to the final period trailing 3-0, but the Peacock wrestler dug down and scored an escape, a takedown, two nearfall points, and a ride time point (1:14) to earn the come-from-behind win.
The 10-9 lead did not last long; the Mavericks posted wins by decision at 165, 174, 184, and 197 to pull out to a 23-10 advantage. Bryce Lumzy, Wade Gobin, Mark Mueller, and Carl Broghammer (#6) all suffered losses in the Maverick run.
Zach Rosol (#5) earned an 8-2 decision in the night's final match. Rosol scored a takedown in the first period and added two more in the second to take a 7-2 lead into the final period. The Peacock junior added a ride time point (1:29) to claim the 8-3 decision.
Upper Iowa (3-3, 2-1 NSIC) will now take the short drive to Marshall, Minnesota for a second NSIC dual with the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University (4-1-1, 0-1 NSIC) on Friday. The Peacocks and Mustangs are set for a 7 p.m. start.
