This Week in Peacock Football...
After a heartbreaking four-point loss last Saturday, Upper Iowa returns home and welcomes the Warriors of Winona State to Eb Eischeid Stadium in Fayette. Kickoff for this Saturday’s matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Last Time Out: The Peacocks dropped their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road contest last Saturday to MSU Moorhead, 28-24. With the loss, UIU fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC.
Scouting the Warriors
The Warriors of Winona State enter Saturday’s contest with a 2-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in NSIC action after falling at St. Cloud State last Saturday, 31-26.
The Warriors won their NSIC opener two weeks ago when they smashed MSU Moorhead 58-3.
WSU ranks very high in many NSIC team statistical categories. The Warriors are the least penalized team the league (28.0 yards per game) and the best team in the league on third downs (44.4%). Winona State also ranks second in scoring offense (36.0 point per game) and total offense (430.3 yards per game).
Winona State is also the best punt returning team in the NSIC with 25.8 yards per return which ranks them fourth in the nation in this category.
Series History
The Peacocks and Warriors have met in each of the last four seasons with Winona State taking all four contests by an average score of 46-8.
The Last Meeting
Upper Iowa travelled to Winona, Minnesota last season on October 10. The Warriors jumped out to a 17-3 lead after the first quarter of action and sent the Peacocks home with a 46-9 loss.
A Booming Punt...
Upper Iowa punter Gus Pruess leads the NSIC in punting with 41.06 yards per punt.
The Hazelton, Iowa native ranks 24th in the nation in this category. The leading punter in the nation is Taylor Accardi from Colorado School of Mines. Accardi is averaging just over 49 yards per punt (49.07).
