The Upper Iowa volleyball team closed out their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road weekend by visiting Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb. The Peacocks met the undefeated #7 Wildcats of Wayne State College. UIU surprised the heavily favored Wildcats by taking set one 25-18, but WSC found their stride over the remainder of the match taking the next three sets (25-22/25-12/25-15) and the NSIC clash, 3-1.
 
 
UIU hit the ball well in the first set posting a .233 hitting percentage, but the team’s hitting went downhill over the next three sets as the hitting errors began to mount. The Peacocks forced Wayne State into 14 hitting errors in the first set, but the Wildcats only tallied 5 more hitting errors over the final three sets.
 
Sara Vance led the Peacock attack with 10 kills, while Nicky Brown, Kayla Wagner and Kristy Hinrichs all added 8 more kills. Skylar Lesan set the offense with 35 assists on the night. The defense was paced by Danielle Gernes and Vance, who registered 19 and 18 digs, respectively. 
 
With the loss, Upper Iowa drops to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in NSIC play, while the Wildcats improve to 10-0 and 2-0 in the early conference race.
 
Upper Iowa will close out a three-match roadtrip this Tuesday when they visit Winona, Minn. to battle the Warriors of Winona State. The Peacocks and Warriors are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at McCown Gymnasium.
