The Upper Iowa Peacock Volleyball team was back in action Saturday afternoon as they welcomed the #4-ranked Wildcats of Wayne State College to Dorman Gym in Fayette for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup. Saturday’s match marked the final home match of the 2010 season and the final time UIU seniors Tatiana Jackson and Alex Fink would play on the historic hardwood of Dorman Gym. The Peacocks gave the Wildcats a battle, but WSC won the match, 3-1.
The Peacocks led throughout the majority of the first set before succumbing to the Wildcats, 28-26. The hard fighting home squad was paced in the first set by Nicky Brown’s eight kills as they posted a .164 hitting percentage. The visitors tallied a .185 hitting percentage during the first set, but rallied from a 19-15 deficit to take the first set.
The Wildcats flexed their nationally ranked muscles in the second set and won 25-18 before Upper Iowa rallied in the third set to win 23-15. However, the Wildcats won set four, 25-15 on their way to a 3-1 victory.
Brown led the way for UIU by tallying 23 kills while freshman Melanie Behnke chipped in 10. The Peacocks hit .142 for the match while the visitors hit an outstanding .234 by recording a .270 in the second set and .310 in the fourth.
Upper Iowa will close out the 2010 season next Friday and Saturday when they hit the road for a pair of NSIC matches. On Friday, UIU visits Crookston, Minn. to take on the Golden Eagles of UM, Crookston at 7 p.m. before visiting Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Dragons of MSU Moorhead.
