This Week in Peacock Soccer...
By winning Sunday’s match over MSU Moorhead 2-1, Upper Iowa has qualified for the 2010 NSIC/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament as the eighth seed. By earning those three points, UIU jumped over Wayne State for the last remaining spot in the postseason tournament.
The Peacocks will travel to Winona, Minn. on Wednesday to battle the top seeded and #16-ranked Warriors of Winona State. The first kick of the match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Scouting the Warriors
The #16-ranked Warriors enter Wednesday’s contest with a 14-3-1 overall record which includes an 11-1-1 mark in NSIC matches.
The Warriors haven’t tasted defeat since a September 25 match at Bemidji State and are 10-0-1 since losing to the Beavers.
WSU also boasts the current NSIC Offensive Player of the Week in freshman forward Jennifer Deroo. Deroo recorded three goals and two assists in two victories last weekend.
Series History
UIU’s series history with Winona State has been a bit one sided since the Peacocks’ transition to NCAA Division II. The Peacocks are 0-9 against the Warriors, however; two of the last three contests between the two teams have been settled in overtime sessions.
The Last Meeting
Upper Iowa and Winona State met earlier this season on September 17 in Fayette. The Warriors defeated UIU, 2-1.
Liz-a-puh-looza
Sophomore forward Liz Kaluzinski finished the regular season as the league leader in goals and points after scoring a goal and recorded an assist in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over MSU Moorhead.
The Belvidere, Ill.-native has netted 12 goals this season while dishing out three assists.
Kaluzinski has notched 17 goals in her two seasons in Peacock Blue while assisting on goals five times.
Firing Away
Another sophomore sensation, Valeria Ptasinski, is tied for the NSIC in shots per game, 4.44, and has recorded the third-most assists in the league with six.
