Peacocks Earn Win #9 at Minnesota, Crookston

Upper Iowa won a four set match at Minnesota, Crookston tonight to open the team’s final weekend of the season. After dropping the first set 25-20, the Peacocks rallied to defeat the Golden Eagles by winning the next three sets, 25-17, 26-24, and 25-20. The win gives UIU their ninth on the season and sixth in Northern Sun Conference play. The team is 9-19 overall and 6-13 in the NSIC with just one conference match to play.
 
Minnesota, Crookston played hard as they attempted to win their first match of the season, but the Peacocks were able to edge their hosts in the third and fourth sets after dominating the second frame. Upper Iowa’s best hitting set came in the fourth when the team hit .303 with 14 kills and just 4 hitting errors.
 
In the deciding set, the teams were close as they raced to 10, but a 6-0 run with Nicky Brown at the service line put the Peacocks in control. UMC closed the gap to 22-20, but three Golden Eagle errors ended the set and the match.
 
Brown and Kayla Wagner led the Peacock offense with 13 kills apiece. Wagner hit .423 on the night making just 2 hitting errors. Sara Vance added 9 kills. Skylar Lesan drove the offense with 40 assists on the night, while Danielle Gernes came up with 15 digs on defense. Vance and Brown each chipped in 10 digs, while Wagner and Vance each had 4 blocks. Vance also had 4 service aces on the night.
 
Upper Iowa will wrap up their 2010 season tomorrow afternoon in Moorhead, Minnesota. The Peacocks will match up with the Dragons of MSU Moorhead at 4 p.m.
