The three-time NCAA Division II National Champion Golden Bears lined up against the Peacocks tonight for a Northern Sun Conference match in Dorman Gym. Concordia University, ranked #7 nationally, walked onto the floor looking to remain undefeated in the NSIC. Upper Iowa lost in straight sets to the high-powered Bears to fall to 5-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play. Concordia improved to 13-4 overall and 8-0 in the NSIC.
UIU stayed with their guests through the first two-thirds of the first set, but CU scored 10 of the final 15 points in the set to pull away with a 25-19 victory. Concordia hit .429 in the set with 15 kills, while Upper Iowa hit .310 with 13 kills. The Achilles’ heel for the home team in the set came at the service line where UIU committed 4 errors. Freshman Melanie Behnke carried the load for Upper Iowa with 6 kills in 7 attempts.
Set two belonged to the Golden Bears as they established a lead early and maintained the advantage throughout to post a 25-15 win. The visitors cooled off to a .290 hitting percentage, but the home team fell to a .129 percentage. Sara Vance carried the hot hand for the Peacocks with 5 kills in the set.
The visitors took the third and final set in quick fashion with a 25-11 win. While CU was hitting .417 in the set, UIU hit a negative percentage with only 6 kills.
Behnke continues to impress for Upper Iowa registering 11 kills and a .280 hitting percentage. Skylar Lesan paced the Peacock attack with 22 assists.
The Golden Bears were led by Megan Carlson (12 kills, 11 digs), Emily Palkert (10 kills), and Amanda Konetchy (34 assists).
The Peacocks will get right back on the court tomorrow with a match against St. Cloud State at 4 p.m. The Huskies won the first match up this past Tuesday, 3-0.
