Southwest Minnesota State @ Upper Iowa
This Week in Peacock Football...
The Peacock Football team returns home this weekend to open a two-game homestand at Eb Eischeid Stadium starting this Saturday when the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State visit Fayette for a 1 p.m. showdown. Both teams are winless in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s South Division.
Last Time Out: Upper Iowa dropped last Saturday’s contest at Minnesota State, 48-14. With the loss, the Peacocks drop to 1-6 on the season and 1-5 in NSIC play.
Scouting the Mustangs
The Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State enter Saturday’s matchup with a 3-4 overall record and a 2-4 mark in the NSIC. Southwest Minnesota State dropped last week’s game at St. Cloud State 24-6 and have lost four of their last five with the only win in that stretch coming two weeks ago when they defeated MSU Moorhead, 49-14.
The Mustangs are the fourth-best team in the NSIC in passing offense (238.7 yards per game) but have one of the worst passing defenses in the league as they give up 240.9 yards per contest.
Series History
Upper Iowa and Southwest Minnesota State has been a regularly scheduled contest since the Peacocks transitioned to NCAA Division II in 2004. The Mustangs hold a slight 4-2 advantage in football since UIU moved up from NCAA Division III.
The Last Meeting
The Peacocks travelled to Marshall, Minn. last season on September 19, 2009. The Mustangs defeated Upper Iowa, 52-24.
Life on the Road
The Peacock Football team has tallied up quite a few miles on the road this season in just their first three road contests.
Upper Iowa visited Commerce, Texas (1,659 miles roundtrip) for their first game and travelled to Moorhead, Minn. (946 miles roundtrip) for their first NSIC road trip. Two weeks ago, the Peacocks travelled another 842 miles roundtrip for the game against Bemidji State.
The Peacocks added another 390 miles round trip last weekend when they visit Mankato.
Upper Iowa have travelled 3,837 miles after this weekend. To put that in perspective, if you were able to drive a car from Fayette to Honolulu, Hawaii, you would drive just over 4,000 miles.
The last two road contests against Concordia-St. Paul and Augustana will add a few more miles to the road tally this season. However, they are two of the shorter drives at 383 miles and 629 miles round trip.
Connecting to Hubbard
Upper Iowa’s Jessie Hubbard ranks eighth in the NSIC in receptions per game. The junior reciever is averaging 4 receptions per game.
