Joey J. Barnes took over the women's tennis program prior to the spring season in 2013.  Barnes is entering his third season in 2014-15 and is the third head coach for the tennis program since its return to the Peacock Athletic Department in the fall of 2006.
 
Joey came to Upper Iowa and Fayette from Florida Gulf Coast University, a NCAA Division I school in Ft. Myers, Florida.  He was in his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Eagles and has more than 30 years of coaching experience. Originally from New York City, Joey is a veteran of our nation’s Armed Forces in which he has served honorably in the U.S. Navy in both the Enlisted and Commissioned Officer's ranks for over 20 years of his active duty.
 
Prior to accepting the assistant coach position at FGCU, Barnes served as an assistant coach with Terrapin tennis program at the University of Maryland for seven years and as a volunteer coach for the Terps for the six years before that. He also coached at Kadena High School for two years. His naval post has allowed Barnes to teach tennis in 12 different countries and all throughout the U.S. He has been active in ensuring the growth of the tennis by coaching the USTA Maryland Travel Team, the USTA League Level Teams, USTA Area Training Camps, as well as many Quick Start and 10-and-Under Programs.


Barnes lives with his wife, Becky, and daughter, Jazmine.  He also has three older sons; Kris and Jon, who live in Maryland, and Anthony, who is in the Navy in Virginia.
 
In addition to coaching at the college and high school levels, Barnes boasts 33 years of experience as a private instructor, where he has coached several WTA and ATP players.


Barnes has served as the director of tennis at both the Georgetown Prep Tennis Club and the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Academy and the Associate Director/Senior Staff Pro for Tennis Dynamic - Collier County Public Parks System. He has also held coordinator positions with Nuveen Senior Tours and the Acura WTA events.
 
He graduated with an Associate of Science degree from Regis College in Denver, Colorado and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and information systems management from the University of Maryland’s branch in Okinawa, Japan.
 
Currently, Barnes is a certified member of the Professional Tennis Registry, the USTA Tennis High Performance Coaching Program and holds a certification rating of Senior Professional (NL2) from the Lawn Tennis Association of the United Kingdom.  Joey is an active member of the United State Tennis Association and the LTA as well.
