Privet’s career-high scoring effort falls short in loss to Bulldogs

Peacock junior scores 25 points while making six 3-pointers in 77-63 loss

FAYETTE, Iowa - UIU women's basketball (8-9, 4-5 GLVC) fell on Saturday to Truman State (Mo.) (9-8,6-3 GLVC), 77-63. Junior guard Ava Privet scored a career-high 25 points while playing 38:49 in the loss. 

Privet started the game hot, scoring nine of UIU's first 11 points with three-straight 3-pointers. She gave the Peacocks an 11-4 lead three minutes into the game.

Truman State settled down after that, going on a 13-2 run to end the quarter with a 17-13 lead. The Bulldogs later extended the lead to 10 points in the second quarter. Trailing 28-20, Kenzie Deaton made a layup, and Privet knocked down two more 3-pointers to tie the game at 28-28. 

After a timeout, TSU responded with a 6-0 run, with four points scored by Avery Rausch. A Bryar Duwe 3-pointer with a minute to go cut the Truman lead to 38-33 at halftime. 

Truman State slowly built its lead back up in the third quarter, outscoring the Peacocks 19-13 for a 57-46 lead. The Bulldogs scored nine points in the quarter from the charity stripe after drawing nine UIU fouls. 

An 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter pushed the Bulldog lead to 22 points, and later it became a game-high 23-point lead with 4:30 to go. Kendyl Lodermeier scored six points in the final few minutes to cut into the deficit, and Privet knocked down a late 3-pointer to fall by 14. 

Privet scored 18 of the team's first 28 points, shooting 6-of-9 (66.7%) to initially tie the game at 28-28 in the second quarter. She finished the game 9-of-18 (50%) from the field and 6-of-12 (50%) from behind the arc. The junior added two rebounds, two steals, an assist and a blocked shot. 

Lodermeier finished with 16 points, her second-most in a game this season. She grabbed a season-high nine rebounds while adding an assist. She finished a perfect 4-of-4 (100%) from the charity stripe while going 6-of-10 (60%) from the field. 

Deaton added eight points, five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. Duwe scored five points with five rebounds. Sydnee Nelson scored four points while dishing out eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds. This is the third time this season she's recorded seven rebounds and her third game of seven assists or more. 

For Truman State, Rausch and Emajin McCallop both scored 17 points. Rausch was a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe. McCallop grabbed seven rebounds with two assists. Morgan Miller scored 12 points with nine rebounds. 

The game featured 44 total fouls, with 22 for each team. Truman State shot 18-of-25 (72%) from the free-throw line while the Peacocks were 14-of-19 (73.7%). 

UIU was 20-of-54 (37%) from the field and 9-of-27 (33.3%) from behind the arc, while Truman State shot 26-of-62 (41.9%) and 7-of-19 (36.8%) on 3-pointers. The Peacocks committed 15 turnovers while the Bulldogs committed 10, helping TSU outscore UIU 18-10 off of them. 

Truman State held the lead for 32:15 of the game, and its bench outscored UIU 36-13. The Bulldogs also had a 32-20 advantage in the paint and a 15-7 advantage on second-chance points. UIU found success on fast breaks, outscoring Truman 13-0. 

The Peacocks hit the road to travel south next week to William Jewell (Mo.) (0-15, 0-9 GLVC) and Rockhurst (Mo.) (6-9, 2-7 GLVC). Upper Iowa faces the Cardinals on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 5:30 p.m. and the Hawks on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 12 p.m.
