FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock women's basketball (4-3, 2-0 GLVC) shot 58.3% from behind the arc and 52.3% from the field to down Lincoln (Mo.) (3-5, 1-2 GLVC) on Thursday night. Bryar Duwe scored a career-high 24 points after shooting 9-of-12 (75%) total with a 5-of-7 (71.4%) mark on 3-pointers in the 90-67 win.
Leading 19-16 with 3:23 left in the first quarter, the Peacocks went on their first run of the game. Upper Iowa ended the opening period of play with an 8-0 run as Kenzie Deaton scored four of the points near the rim. UIU led 27-16 after the opening quarter by shooting 11-of-18 from the field and 5-of-7 (71.4%) from behind the arc.
The Peacocks followed up the 27-point first quarter with a 29-point second quarter, shooting 12-of-16 (75%) from the field. Duwe was a perfect 4-for-4 with 11 points in the quarter. Nine of her points came on an 11-2 run in the final 3:48 of the first half.
UIU led 56-32 at halftime after shooting 23-of-34 (67.6%) with an 8-of-11 (72.7%) mark on 3-pointers. In comparison, Lincoln was 11-of-38 (28.9%) from the field and 5-of-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc. Duwe had 16 points in the first half, and Sydnee Nelson had 10 points.
An Ava Privet 3-pointer with 4:27 left in the third quarter gave the Peacocks a 70-39 lead for their largest of the game at 31 points. The Peacocks were able to play 12 different players in the contest, with junior Reagan Hofer nailing a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Duwe added six rebounds, four assists and two steals to her 24-point night. Nelson finished with 18 points, shooting 6-of-9 (66.7%) and 2-of-3 (66.7%) from behind the arc. The junior point guard tied for the team-high in rebounds with six while adding four assists. Her six rebounds matched a career-high.
Privet scored 14 points, shooting 5-of-7 (71.4%) from the field and 4-of-5 (80%) behind the 3-point line. She also had three assists, two rebounds and a steal. Ellie Foster scored 11 points with a team-high six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Kendyl Lodermeier tallied eight points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Deaton finished with six points, two assists and two rebounds. She was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field. Josie Foster scored four points with five rebounds, while Jordan McMahon had two points and two rebounds.
Lincoln was led by Bella Borgos with 16 points and six rebounds. Laini Joseph scored 13 points with four rebounds. Kennedy Jones led the team in rebounds (seven), assists (five) and steals (two).
Both teams had 13 turnovers, but the Peacocks had four more steals, 10-6. Upper Iowa also had the advantage on points off turnovers, 27-11, and on fast breaks, 19-0.
UIU had 22 assists compared to 11 for the Blue Tigers. The Peacocks had a 38-24 advantage in the paint. Despite that, Lincoln outscored Upper Iowa 24-6 on second-chance points. The Peacocks led for 38:33 while the Blue Tigers never led.
The Peacocks' stellar shooting had them 34-of-65 (52.3%) from the field, 14-of-24 (58.3%) from behind the arc and 8-of-11 (72.7%) from the charity stripe. That marked the team's highest percentages from both the field and on 3-pointers this season. The Blue Tigers were 25-of-73 (34.2%) from the field, 8-of-27 (29.6%) from behind the arc and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the charity stripe.
Upper Iowa continues December GLVC action against Missouri S&T (3-3, 1-1 GLVC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium. The Miners come into the game off a 74-67 loss to Quincy (Ill.) (4-3, 1-1 GLVC) on Thursday night.
