WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - Upper Iowa women's basketball (0-1) opened the season with a 95-40 loss to Northern Michigan (4-0). The Wildcats shot 38-of-75 (50.7%) from the field at Justagame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.
The Peacocks were led in scoring by Northern Iowa transfer Ellie Foster with eight points. Truman State transfer Bryar Duwe had seven points, three rebounds and an assist. Kendyl Lodermeier totaled a team-high five rebounds while adding six points.
Jordan McMahon added six points as she finished 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Freshman Josie Foster shot 2-of-2 from the field with a 3-pointer for five points. UIU's top five scorers were all newcomers to the team this season.
The Wildcats shot 12-of-19 (63.16%) from the field and 5-of-8 (62.5%) from behind the arc in the first quarter to take a 31-11 lead. Northern Michigan outscored the Peacocks, 59-23, in the opening half and finished it shooting 24-of-40 (60%) from the field.
Northern Michigan slowed down a bit in the second half, shooting 40% from the field, but still outscored the Peacocks 36-17. NMU finished 12-of-24 (50%) on 3-pointers while UIU was 5-of-21 (23.8%).
Jacy Weisbrod led the Wildcats with a season-high 22 points shooting 8-of-16 (50%) from the field and 6-of-13 (46.1%) from behind the arc. Senior forward Alyssa Hill totaled a game-high 13 rebounds while adding nine points. Sophomore Madison Schroeder was the second-highest scorer with 10 points.
Upper Iowa finished the game shooting 14-of-51 (27.5%) from the field. UNM won the rebounding battle, 53-25, with 21 offensive rebounds. The Peacocks were 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
UIU wraps up the opening weekend at Justagame Fieldhouse against Michigan Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Peacocks' home opener is on Tuesday against Winona State (Minn.) at 6 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
