Peacocks Face the Felines in Missouri

THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S BASKETBALL… Upper Iowa travels to Missouri to face off against Drury on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 5:45 p.m. and Southwest Baptist, Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.

SETTING SEASON HIGHS… Helen Staley is coming off a fantastic weekend in the paint, where she averaged 12.0 boards per game. In the Peacocks victory over Rockhurst, Staley grabbed ten rebounds while matching her season-high by dishing out seven assists. She followed that up with a career-high 14-rebounds over William Jewell while recording three assists. Staley added at least one block and steal in both matches, and she has currently blocked at least one shot in 12-consecutive games. Staley has averaged 1.2 blocks per game on the year, which ranks fourth overall in the GLVC and she leads the Peacocks with an average of 8.1 rebounds and her team-leading 3.7 assists per game also ranks fourth in the conference.
 
SCORING SENSATION… Mia Huberty added to her GLVC leading 19.9 points per game, with a 33-point performance over WJC. This marks the second time on the season that Huberty has surpassed the 30-point mark, as she shot 10-18 from the field, 4-7 from three-point range and 9-10 at the charity stripe. She ranks second amongst guards in the conference with shooting percentage of 47.2% and she has been just as successful at the three-point line, shooting 47.0%. Huberty has added 6.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game on the season, which both rank second on the team.
 
LIGHTS OUT SHOOTERS… The Peacocks converted 45.5% (10-22) of their three-point attempts in the win over Rockhurst. Ava Privet led all scorers with 15 points, and she shot 5-8 from the floor and 3-5 from beyond the arc. Kayla Bohr recorded 13 points on 3-4 three-point shooting while Sydnee Nelson added six points on 2-3 shooting from beyond the arc. In the following game against William Jewell, Nelson scored six points on a perfect 2-2 shooting from three, while Amelia Valentino dropped nine points on an also perfect 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc.

DOMINANT DRURY… The Panthers have posted the best record in the GLVC, as they have gone 10-1 in conference play and 14-4 overall. They are currently on a four-game win streak and they lead the conference with an average of 77.8 points per game while ranking second in efficiency at 45.8% shooting from the floor. Sophomore Rhi Gibbons has scored a team-high 14.1 points per game while leading all guards in the conference with a 50.3% shooting percentage. Senior Caitlynn Daniels has scored 13.4 points per game on 40.7% shooting while hauling in 6.2 rebounds per game. She has thrived on both ends of the floor as she ranks second in the conference with both an average of 6.6 assists per game as well as 2.5 steals per game. Daniels's season has been highlighted by a triple double against Missouri S&T (ten points, ten rebounds, 11 assists), while adding three steals and blocked two shots. Sophomore Sara Mendel has averaged 9.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, and she has been the most efficient scorer in the GLVC, shooting 59.3% from the field.

SCOUTING SOUTHWEST BAPTIST… The Bearcats have recorded a mark of 5-6 in the GLVC, while going 7-10 on the year. They field the tallest player in the conference in 6-6 senior Tori Hamilton, who is averaging 11.8 points per game on 55.1% shooting which ranks fourth in the GLVC. She also ranks fourth overall with an average of 8.2 rebounds per game and her 1.6 blocks per game rank third in the conference. Hamilton's coming off a season-high five blocks against UIndy, and she has recorded an average of 3.5 blocks per game over the last four matches. Fifth year Amber Storr leads the team with 12.6 points per game on 42.8% shooting. She has scored in double figures in six of her last seven games, and she recorded a season-high 24 points on efficient shooting splits (7-11 FG, 4-5 3PT, 6-6 FT) against Haskell.
 
MARK YOUR CALENDARS… The Peacocks return to Fayette the following weekend, to take on Lincoln, Thursday, Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. and Missouri S&T on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
