The Peacocks concluded their 2023-24 season in the GLVC Tournament Semifinals as they were unable to overcome the nationally ranked Drury Panthers in a hard-fought 88-82 game. UIU finished the season with their best record in over 20 years as they accumulated a 15-13 overall record while going 12-12 in GLVC play.
Drury jumped out to an early nine-point lead highlighted by a pair of three pointers by Beth Matas Martin.
Mia Huberty and
Katie Tornstrom each responded with a three pointer and a
Kayla Bohr midrange jumper cut the lead to four.
Brooke Evenson added an and one jumper in the paint with 30 seconds remaining to help cut the Drury lead to 22-15 at the end of the first.
Huberty and Evenson converted on consecutive jumpers to start the second quarter scoring for UIU, following a pair of layups by Drury. The Panthers capitalized on their defensive efforts as they recorded multiple steals which led to fast break layups.
Alaina Brenning scored on a jumper at the 1:30 mark and she added a free throw with three seconds remaining to make it a 35-27 game.
Brenning scored on an and one jumper to start the third and a three pointer by
Ava Privet cut the Panthers lead to two. Drury's offense caught fire a minute into the quarter, as they scored on seven possessions in a row which included multiple three pointers. Brenning added another two free throws and Evenson cashed a three pointer at the six-minute mark.
Cassidy Pagel, Evenson, and Brenning each got to the line where they shot a perfect 2-2 and Brenning continued to thrive, scoring on another three pointer.
The Panthers opened the fourth by making an and one jumper and Huberty quickly responded with a three pointer which cut the lead to 70-61. Pagel scored on a jumper in the paint and Brenning added three straight layups, which included an and one at the five-minute mark. Huberty scored on multiple shots in the paint, followed by a Bohr jumper. Tornstrom knocked down a clutch three pointer at the one-minute mark which made it an 83-80 game. The Peacocks were forced to foul, but Drury was able to close out the game shooting 5-6 at the line, to secure an 88-82 victory.
Alaina Brenning closed out her collegiate career by setting her season-high for the third game in a row. Brenning scored a career-best 22 points on 7-9 shooting while going 7-9 at the charity stripe.
She also led the Peacocks with five assists and added four rebounds and a steal.
Mia Huberty recorded 17 points on 6-17 shooting, and she added three assists and two steals.
Brooke Evenson put up a 12-point performance on 4-9 shooting while making all three of her free throws. She tied for a team-high with seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Evenson finished her collegiate career with 1,135 points which is the seventh most in school history.
Katie Tornstrom scored 11-points while matching Evenson's seven rebounds. She recorded a game-high four steals and added two assists. Tornstrom concluded her Upper Iowa career with 1,064 points which ranks 11
th all-time in school history.
Cassidy Pagel added ten points and three rebounds while making all four of her free throw attempts.
Upper Iowa has a lot to be proud of as they began the season as a projected #11 seed in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll before making it all the way to semifinals. The Peacocks season was highlighted by multiple game winners over UIndy and Southwest Baptist, a record-breaking three all conference selections, and two 1,000-point scorers for the second time in school history.
