Upper Iowa has won their second consecutive game at home and have improved to 9-8 (6-7 GLVC), following their 62-56 victory over the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons.
The trio of
Katie Tornstrom,
Mia Huberty and
Brooke Evenson combined for all 16 of UIU's first quarter points, with Evenson scoring seven of the Peacocks first nine points of the game. The Tritons took a 10-9 lead halfway through the quarter, but a Tornstrom two-point jumper with 3:32 left in the first gave the Peacocks the lead which lasted for the remainder of the game. Tornstrom ended the first quarter, and immediately started the second quarter with a three point make, to give the Peacocks a 19-12 lead.
Kayla Bohr and
Cassidy Pagel both added layups, and Tornstrom's third three pointer of the game pushed the Peacock lead to eight. She finished the half with a team-high 13 points on 5-7 FG shooting while going 3-4 from beyond the arc. Evenson finished the half with seven points and four rebounds while Huberty added another five points and a team-high three assists.
The Peacocks outscored the Tritons 14-13 in the third quarter, attacking the paint all throughout the quarter, scoring ten points on layups. UIU's defensive efforts led to multiple steals and fast break buckets, which boosted UIU's lead to 45-38. Upper Iowa's first four points of the fourth quarter came at the free throw line, before Huberty knocked down consecutive three pointers to build on the Peacock lead. With a five-point lead and 30 seconds remaining, the Peacocks were sent to the line for the first of four times, where they converted on 7-8 of their clutch free throws to ice the game. The Peacocks pulled off a very crucial 62-56 victory which propels them over the Tritons in the GLVC standings.
Katie Tornstrom finished with a team-high 21 points and eight rebounds and very efficient shooting splits (7-13 FG, 4-7 3PT, 3-4 FT). She was just as terrific on the defensive end, recording three steals and blocking a shot.
Mia Huberty finished with 15 points while shooting 2-4 from beyond the arc. She led the Peacocks with three assists and added two steals.
Brooke Evenson finished the game with 11 points, six rebounds and one block.
Kayla Bohr added eight points on 4-7 shooting with two steals and
Cassidy Pagel scored six points and hauled in seven rebounds.
The Peacocks perimeter defense was on point all throughout the game, as they didn't allow a three-point field goal, holding the Tritons to 0-13 shooting. The last time the Peacocks held their opponent to zero three pointers was just a day shy of exactly six years ago, when Northern State was held scoreless from beyond the arc on February 2, 2018.
The Peacocks will look to make it a perfect 2-0 against McKendree, following their 84-75 over the Bearcats at the start of January. The match will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.
