Upper Iowa women's tennis traveled to Winona State this weekend for their first match of the spring season. The Peacocks fell in their season opener as the Warriors swept them 7-0 at the Winona Tennis Center. UIU started off their season 0-1 (0-1 NSIC) while WSU grabbed their first win of the year and began 2023 with a 1-0 (1-0 NSIC) record.
The Warriors began the day with a convincing win in the doubles competition. The team of Rafaela Tavares and Johanne Valle were defeated in the number one slot by Winona State's Beth Murman and Sara Anderson by a score of 6-1. The second matchup went down in similar fashion for the Peacocks as
Varvara Ogorodnikova and
Elaina Wall were defeated 6-1 in the No. 2 slot to WSU's pair of Rachel Kelly and Ally Burger.
The singles competitions were just as impressive for the Warriors. They kept all the matches to only two sets each. Ogorodnikova put up the best effort in her battle with Murman, but fell short in a 6-3, 6-3 score. Tavares and Valle were next up in their duels, each only being able to put up two points against their opponents. The win against Valle sealed the Warrior team win.
In the final two matches of the day, Winona kept the Peacocks scoreless. Miranda Daulong defeated
Elaina Wall 6-0,6-0 and Clara Thomke finished the day off with a sweep after conquering
Katie O'Brien 6-0, 6-0.
Up next, the Peacocks are on the road again in two weeks as they head north to take on NSIC foe, Bemidji State. The match is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
