Peacocks Corral Wildcats and Extend Win Streak

Upper Iowa women's basketball extended their win streak to three games after tonight's 73-59 victory over Wayne State. The Peacocks' triumph accelerated their record to 9-13 overall and 5-12 in conference. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 10-11 (6-11 NSIC) for the season.

UIU made a statement early on after executing a 13-0 slide four minutes into the first quarter. The electric run was fueled behind scoring from Lydia Haack, Katie Tornstrmom and Lexie Lodermeier. The Peacocks ended the quarter with a 20-14 advantage.

The Peacocks got out to a ten-point lead in the second period, but it quickly diminished as they went on a scoring drought for several minutes and Wayne State completed an 8-0 run to bring them within single digits. The Wildcats fired up as they outscored Upper Iowa 19-16 and shot over 50% from the field (6-12) and 57% from beyond the arc (4-7). They cut the deficit to three points, 36-33, going into halftime.

Upper Iowa regrouped at the intermission and came out firing away, netting over 70% from the floor (10-14) and 50% from three-point land (3-6). In comparison, Wayne State struggled to shoot, only converting 28% from the floor. The Peacocks outscored the Wildcats 23-12 in the third session, ignited by Callista-Rochon Baker who had nine points in that ten-minute segment.Haack and Mia Huberty put together a 9-1 run to close the quarter with the 59-45 advantage.

Wayne State kicked off the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run, but slowly faded away as Upper Iowa executed in the next eight minutes and maintained their double-digit lead, sealing the game with a 73-59 effort.

Upper Iowa shot 48% from the floor and 32% from long distance in tonight's contest. They pulled down 15 offensive boards in comparison to Wayne State's eight offensive rebounds. The Peacocks also converted 40 points in the paint. The Wildcats shot 37% from the field and 39% beyond the arc.

The full court pressure that WSC implemented throughout the game forced UIU to turn the ball over 19 times in the contest. However, the Peacocks applied the pressure right back as they caused Wayne State to turn the ball over 22 times.

Haack led all scorers with 29 points on 11-15 shooting, including 5-6 from the three-point line. Tornstrom contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Rochon-Baker added 10 points and hauled in nine boards.

Wayne State was led in scoring by Maya Fitzpatrick who netted 15 points on 5-9 shooting, including 3-4 from long distance.
