Peacocks Look to End Non-Conference Play on a High Note

THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S BASKETBALL… Upper Iowa looks to make it three wins in a row as they take on Crown College in their final non-conference game of the season. The Peacocks will host the match on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m.

TROUNCING TRUMAN STATE… The Peacocks are coming off back-to-back victories against Truman State. They came back from down 16 in their first match with the Bulldogs before defeating them by 19 points one week later. Fifth-year Katie Tornstrom scored a team-high 21 points in both games and was dominant on both ends of the floor, averaging 8.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 4.0 steals. Junior Mia Huberty averaged 15.0 points per game and recorded a career-high ten assists in their first match with Truman State. Huberty made six shots in both games and shot a very impressive 6-8 from the floor in their rematch. Fifth-year Brooke Evenson averaged 12.0 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game while also being spectacular on the defensive end. Evenson averaged 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks and put together a 15-point double-double performance in the rematch. Senior Kayla Bohr averaged 10.0 points per game and recorded a steal in both matches. Bohr recorded her season-high 15 points in their first meeting on 7-11 shooting from the field. Other notable performances against Truman State include:
  • Sophomore Amelia Valentino: 12 points on 4-6 three-point shooting in Game 1
  • Senior Alaina Brenning: seven points and five assists on 100% free throw shooting in Game 2
  • Senior Cassidy Pagel: four points and nine rebounds in Game 2
  • Freshman Ava Privet: 12 points on 4-5 three-point shooting in Game 2

BATTLE FOR THE CROWN… The Crown College Polars have started the year 2-7 and are coming off a 26-point victory against Northland College. Sophomore Isabelle Sager has been a force in the paint, averaging 13.8 rebounds per game over Crown's last four games. She broke the school record with 17 rebounds in a game against Northland, while adding 19 points. She has averaged 8.3 points per game on the year and has recorded at least eight rebounds in all but one game. Senior McKenzie Latzke has been the team's go-to scorer, while shooting 25-78 from three (32.1%). Latzke is averaging 12.4 points per game, 2.9 rebounds per game and leads the Polars with 1.3 steals per game. Freshman Sonia Urbina is their only other player who has started all nine games, averaging 6.7 points on 32.4% shooting, while adding 2.2 rebounds per game. Urbina has been the team's go-to playmaker as she leads the team with 2.0 assists per game. Six other players have started at least one game this season, which includes sophomore Hazel Serapio who has averaged 6.4 points per game and freshman Sydney Cotten who has shot 42.1% from three-point range.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS… Upper Iowa women's basketball will return at the start of 2024 with away and home matches. The Peacocks face McKendree on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. before returning home to host Lewis on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 1 p.m.
