Beavers Display Sharp Shooting in Fourth Quarter to Sink Peacocks

Upper Iowa led by one going into the final quarter against Minot State, but ended up being outscored by their opponent 28-16 in the last ten minutes. The Beavers' high shooting percentage and scoring pattern in the fourth sent the Peacocks home empty handed. Upper Iowa fell on the road in a 72-61 final.

The contest started off in a back and forth battle with both teams going on scoring runs in an attempt to pull ahead. The first quarter ended 13-12, the Peacocks trailing by one. The battle remained within close proximity until Minot State went on an 8-0 run to close out the half, putting them up by ten points, 33-23.

UIU dominated the third segment, outscoring MSU 22-11 and shooting 46.2% from the field. The Beavers had a stint throughout the quarter where they missed 11 straight field goal attempts, resulting in their squad only shooting 23.5% for that period. The Peacocks ended on a 13-1 run on a combination of free throws, three pointers and jump shots.

Katie Tornstrom opened the final ten minutes with a triple, kickstarting Upper Iowa's three-point stride as they knocked down 4-7 in the final quarter. After the first possession, they held a 48-44 lead. However, UIU's shooting beyond the arc was not enough to combat Minot State's overall 64% (9-14) from the field in the final segment. Tornstrom found herself in foul trouble and was sent to the sidelines with two minutes left, leaving the Peacocks to finish without their leading scorer for the night. The Beavers executed a 18-2 run in the fourth, helping seal their victory.

The Peacocks were led by Torrnstrom who netted 17 points going 6-17 from the floor, including 4-9 from long range. Lydia Haack contributed 16 and dished out four assists. Lexie Lodermeier hauled in eight rebounds.

Overall, Upper Iowa shot 31.3% on 21-67 from the floor and netted 10-27 (37%) beyond the arc. Mint State converted 27-66 (40.9%) from the field and 6-20 (30%) from three-point land.

The Peacocks are back in Fayette next weekend for two more conference games. They host Minnesota Moorhead on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Northern State makes their way into Dorman Memorial Gymnasium the following day for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
