The Upper Iowa women's basketball team secured a 76-67 win over the University of Sioux Falls to sweep the weekend. UIU sent seniors
Savannah Domeyer and
Sidney Brastad home with a win as five Peacocks finished with double-digit scoring totals. UIU improved to 7-17 (4-14 NSIC), while USF fell to 14-11 (9-9 NSIC).
A balanced UIU scoring attack saw six Peacocks combine for 71 of the team's 76 points. Domeyer led the way with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three blocks off the bench. The blocks broke a tie with Christa Hammel (111) for most in Upper Iowa history. The senior center shot 3-5 from the floor and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line, setting a career-high in makes and trying a career-high in attempts.
Lydia Haack finished with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. The point guard shot 5-7 from the floor, 3-4 from the free throw line, and knocked down her lone three-point attempt.
Jessica Musgrave added 12 points and eight rebounds, while
Brooke Evenson notched her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Mia Huberty scored in double-digits for the fourth consecutive game, finishing with 11 points thanks to a 3-5 clip from downtown.
Katie Tornstrom contributed eight points and five rebounds off the pine, while
Lexie Lodermeier added two points, four rebounds, and two blocks. Senior
Sidney Brastad knocked down a three-pointer late to give Peacocks their biggest lead of the night and round out the UIU scoring.
Megan Fannin led USF with 14 points on 7-18 from the floor and 0-7 from three. Sydney White scored 11 points off the bench, while starters Olivia Gamoke (9) Danielle Schaub (8) combined for 17 points. Krystal Carlson finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Peacocks took an 18-13 lead thanks to a 10-2 run that took just under two minutes. UIU shot 4-4 overall as layups from Domeyer and Haack bookended a pair of triples from Tornstrom. The Cougars came up with a 6-0 answer to take a 19-18 lead through one.
The Peacocks reclaimed the advantage before the teams traded leads to start the second period, but USF used a 7-0 stretch to go ahead 28-22. UIU answered with a 10-3 run over the final five minutes of the quarter, including a 6-0 spurt capped off by a steal and three-point shot at the buzzer from Huberty to give UIU a one-point halftime lead, 32-31.
After Sioux Falls scored the second half's first basket, Upper Iowa pulled away in the third quarter thanks to a 13-2 run that gave them a double-digit lead, 45-35. The Cougars cut the lead to seven at the end of the third quarter, 54-47, and a 4-0 USF start to the fourth frame cut the Upper Iowa advantage to just one possession. UIU built its lead back to double-digits, 67-57, thanks to a 13-6 run that saw six different Peacocks score. The Cougars cut their deficit to eight with three and a half minutes to play, but a 7-2 answer from UIU put the nail in the coffin. The run featured four straight free throws from Domeyer and was capped off by a triple from Brastad to give the Peacocks their largest lead of the night, 76-63, as the senior duo fitting capped off a 76-67 win on Senior Night.
The teams shot a similar percentage from the floor as UIU hit 23-59 (39%) shots, while USF made 25-66 (37.9%) field goals. Upper Iowa's edge came from the three-point and free throw lines as UIU was plus-15 from deep and plus-eight from the charity stripe. The Peacocks shot 7-22 (31.8%) from three and 23-27 (85.2%) from the foul line, while the Cougars shot 2-16 (12.5%) from distance and 15-16 (93.8%) from the stripe. Sioux Falls held a 34-36 advantage in paint points, but Upper Iowa was plus-seven on the defensive glass, finishing with a 42-35 rebounding edge. The Peacocks also finished with a 13-5 lead in second chance points and an 18-8 margin in fast break points, including 9-0 in the first half.
Up next, the Peacocks will conclude their home slate against Minnesota State University Mankato on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 5:30 p.m. after their non-conference bout against Iowa Wesleyan University scheduled for Feb. 14 was canceled. Upper Iowa will wrap up its 2021-22 campaign on the road against Concordia University, St. Paul in St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 3:30 p.m.
