Cougars Conquer Peacocks in Overtime Contest

Box Score Upper Iowa women's basketball welcomed the University of Sioux Falls to Fayette for their first matchup of the weekend. The tough-fought battle was sent into overtime and resulted in favor of the Cougars, 79-71. The loss dropped the Peacocks to 4-5 (0-4 NSIC). Sioux Falls picked up their first conference win of the season as they improved to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in conference.

The Peacocks trailed 57-49 with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Triples from Katie Tornstrom and Callista Rochon-Baker gave the squad new life as they chipped away at the margin. Upper Iowa led 66-64 with under two minutes left. The next score was from the Cougars as they drove baseline and converted a bunny at the basket with 12 seconds remaining to tie it up at 66. UIU was unable to respond and connect in their last possession of the fourth,  sending the game into an extra period.

USF came out and netted the first two baskets of the extra session. Helen Staley countered with a jumper in an attempt to shift the momentum, but after two more Sioux Falls buckets and an and-one from Lydia Haack, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run to secure the final decision.

Upper Iowa shot 28-78 (35.9%) from the field in comparison to Sioux Falls who put up 29-64 (45.3%). The Peacocks attempted to limit second offensive opportunities for the Cougars as they held them to only three second chance points and two offensive rebounds. UIU hauled in 12 offensive boards and netted 12 second chance points. USF converted 13-15 from the charity stripe.

Tornstrom led the team with 20 points, shooting 5-12 from behind the arc. Besides swishing three pointers, she hunted the glass hard, grabbing nine rebounds. Haack tallied 17 points, dished out eight assists and snagged eight boards. Lexie Lodermeier added nine rebounds.

The Cougars were led by Brecli Honnor who tallied 24 points and shot 10-16 from the floor. Right behind her was Megan Fannin who contributed 23 points, going 6-13 from the field and 3-7 from long range.

The Peacocks are back in action tomorrow against Southwest Minnesota State for a 3:30 p.m. tip. The contest will be aired live on KCRG 9.2.
